It must be because of the shading/lighting I tried: light from above and shines some parts of the body, while the rest disappears into the shadows, darkening them...

That might be the reason. Just like in some nextgen games: The graphics looks most epic with the lighting effect that has came to be better these days. (Best game to prove this statement: Crysis)
