A concept design for a webcomic idea I had a long time ago. This was to be a fan sequel to HG Wells' War of the Worlds.
In it the martians return in the present, however, sensing their own inevitable extinction have instead used human genetic data to create a human-hybrid martian to take their place and conquer earth. This gives them resistance to Earth diseases and frees them of their reliance on human blood for nutrition.
The antennae are part of their empathic abilities, that is to say that instead of being fully telepathic like the old martians, these new martians can only sense emotions. Also they cannot sense human emotions as we do not have the organs to transmit or receive them.
Some of this backfires as they are also able to better understand where humanity is coming from and their ability to communicate emotions gives them difficulty when inflicting suffering on others even if they cannot sense the emotions.
