They aren't, actually- at least it isn't depicted in the pic, only that they're keeping them stuck there by being tight. The red markings are a kind of symbol that the character has on their chest-tummy.

I'll draw them again, hopefully soon! It's a very meaningful OC that came to my mind not much time ago, it's more about feelings(and you got it right: depression, anxiety...) and not much about a "persona", but I found it interesting enough as to draw them (I can swear I have like a trillion ideas for characters but never really draw them xD).
The character has some really cool features that aren't showing here, but that hopefully people will like... and why not, even find relatable^^
