This particular piece of Star Fox fanart even came with a short story! It's a semi-sequel to the story from this pic: http://naterrang.deviantart.com/art.....ystal-98910499
Does it still hold up today? I'll let you decide:
Krystal had spent the last six days hanging out in this seedy little bar called “Talon's Refuge” which was close to the temporary lodging where she was staying.
Each day that Fox didn't come bursting through the doors and begging her to come back, jaded her a little more. Seven glasses of various shapes and sizes surrounded her. Most were empty or near empty. Yes, she'd spent almost all her time here, --getting hit on every ten minutes, and being sent more free drinks than she could possibly consume. Ever since that day, nearly a week ago now, she felt lost. She had nowhere to go. Her home planet had been destroyed years ago. All her friends... her family... her entire race wiped out in an instant. The cause of which was never found. She vowed long ago she would discover what happened. She was so young at the time... She spent the next five years going from planet to planet searching for clues. During that time she'd never felt so lonely in her entire life. She didn't want to do that again. But now, feelings of hopelessness and loss saturated her thoughts. What was she going to do now?
Across the room, the double doors hissed open and a familiar figure swaggered in.
Krystal glanced over her shoulder. “Great.” She sarcastically muttered.
He scanned the room and located Krystal. A smug grin came over his face, like a wolf preying on sheep. He walked over to her table, slid out the chair, sat down, and kicked his feet up onto the edge of the table.
Krystal scowled at him. “What do you want Wolf?”
Wolf was an ocean of self confidence a successful life's worth of criminal activity brought. “What's the matter? Scared?”
Krystal looked away and scoffed. “I'm REALLY not in the mood.”
Wolf stared at the ceiling. “So what's a respectful vixen like you doing in this dump?”
Krystal closed her eyes. “I don't want to talk about it.”
Wolf chuckled slowly. “Word's been getting around that Fox kicked you off the team.”
Krystal stared across the room. “What do you care?”
Wolf laughed to himself. “That Fox is a bigger idiot than I thought.”
Krystal sighed in defeat and stared at the table. “He was just doing it to-
Wolf cut her off. “He was doing it to protect you? Yeah. What else is new? You're not the first girlfriend he's kicked off the team.”
Krystal raised her head abruptly and stared at Wolf. “What are you talking about?”
Wolf raised an eyebrow. “What? He never told you? Heh, you've been with The Star Pup team for how long and you don't know your own history?”
Krystal said nothing.
“Yeah, Fox had the hots for this babe named Fara. Real looker, everything was going great. I figured they'd settle down and have some pups. Then, she got hurt on a mission, real bad. She's in a wheelchair now. Immediately after that Fox dumped her off in a similar fashion like he did you and took off. Sure, he claimed he did it to protect her, but if he really wanted to protect her shouldn't he have stayed with her in her time of need? Similar to your case isn't it? I guess he loved his job more than he loved you.”
Krystal slammed her fist down on the table nearly upsetting a few empty glasses. She grit her teeth and glared at Wolf. “I know you well enough, O'Donnell, not to trust a word you say!” She turned away. “Just go away! This conversation is over!” She yelled, venom in every word.
Wolf shrugged, reached into his pocket and pulled out a datapad. “You don't have to take my word for it.” He tossed the pad on the table. “Check the public record for Star Fox yourself.”
Krystal stared at the pad for a few moments. She picked it up, hesitated, then flipped it on. She searched for the Star Fox public database file and started looking through the personnel section. She stopped abruptly when she reached Fara's file. She scanned over the information then caught sight of an image near the bottom of the page. It was a picture of Fara standing next to Fox. His arm was around her waist, his head resting on her shoulder. They were both laughing, just like Fox and her used too... A single tear rolled down her cheek. She felt so betrayed... She continued looking through the files, unsure if she really wanted to see what was inside. That feeling of betrayal slowly turned to rage as she discovered two more names; Miyu and Fay. In the few years she was with the Star Fox team, Fox had never mentioned any of these women. So that's how it was. She was just another footnote in a long list of female members Fox kicked off the team, and then promptly forgot. She was so angry she was seeing red. She slammed the datapad into the floor, shattering it into a dozen pieces. She then grabbed one of the shot glasses by her hand that still had some liquid in it and downed it. She then glared at Wolf again. “Is this what you wanted!? To tell me that everything I thought I had over the last few years has been a lie!?”
Wolf stared up at the ceiling, the grin never leaving his face. “No. I just thought it was about time you knew the truth. Life is full of disappointments like these. Get over it.”
Krystal raked her fingernails across the table, leaving deep scratch-marks in the synthetic wood.
“So now what? Where are you going from here?” He asked.
Krystal stared at the floor. “I- I don't know...
Wolf laid his hand on the table and glanced over at her. “I've got a proposition for you then. Join Star Wolf.”
Krystal laughed scornfully. “You can't be serious! You really think I'm going to join a bunch of criminals like you!?”
Wolf raised his hand. “I know my team has a reputation for being more... brutal than your precious Star Fox-
Krystal cut him off “You joined Andross when he tried to conquer the Lylat system!!”
Wolf shrugged. “If you saw the size of that check you might not be so quickly inclined to judge us. We're not so different. Both of our teams are mercenaries, we don't play sides. Heck, --We don't believe in most of the ideals our clients do. But if it makes you feel better, our organization has changed. The last few months we've been doing nothing but respectable work. An escort mission here, a bounty there, I can assure you everything we do these days IS legal.”
Krystal was silent.
Wolf glanced at her again. “It doesn't change anything, but I want you to know, --I do regret the decision to work with a madman like Andross. If the opportunity came again, I probably wouldn't take it.”
“ Probably.” Krystal scoffed. “Why do you want ME? I'm not the best pilot, what other use could you possibly have for me?”`
Wolf looked over at her. “Don't you already know?”
Krystal gave him a puzzled look, then finally caught on. “-You want to me for my powers.”
“You're a Cerinian . Knowing what the enemy is thinking before he makes his move would be an incredible advantage.”
“No way!” She angrily responded. “I won't let you USE me like as a tool to take advantage of others!”
Wolf waved it off. “Calm down pup. I didn't mean it that way. You'd be a full fledged member of Star Wolf, contributing your unique talents to the group when you feel it's appropriate. If you don't approve of the mission, you have every right to walk away from it. I only ask that if you sense something that could endanger the mission, or the safety of the team you share it with the rest of us.”
Krystal sighed, a melancholy expression coming over her face. “I gave up using my powers two years ago. Right after the Aparoid Invasion. During one battle I tried to influence the Aparoids into a trap... I underestimated the power of their hive mind. I nearly lost myself... I can't risk that happening again.”
Wolf was silent for once.
Krystal looked across the table at him again. “I suddenly don't seem as useful anymore do I?”
Wolf shook his head. “This changes nothing. The offer is still open.”
Krystal crossed her arms. “Going to try convincing me to embrace my powers again?”
Wolf shrugged. “What you decide to do with your gift in the end is irrelevant to me. True, your piloting skills are rough, but I see real potential. I'll take you under my wing and teach you everything I know. Including all those maneuvers Fox never told you about because they're too dangerous.”
Krystal closed her eyes and sighed. “I- I don't know Wolf... This doesn't feel right.”
Wolf crossed his arms. “Remember, Fox kicked you off the team because he thinks you're a weak pup who lacks the skill and power to protect herself. I one the other hand, see a wild vixen who refuses to be tamed! A powerful vixen who takes lip from no one! I can turn you into that vixen. And the next time you see fox, you'll have the piloting skills to take him down a notch and show him he doesn't control your destiny!” Wolf leaned in close to her. “We're a family at Star Wolf. If you join and obey the rules, I promise you that you'll never be forced to leave.”
Krystal was silent for a few moments. Then, she raised her eyes and started directly into Wolf's. “You're right Wolf. Fox doesn't control my life. I won't allow myself to be used like that again!” She downed the last drops of liquid from the last glass. Then, stared intently at Wolf “I accept! I'll join Star Wolf!”
Wolf bared all his teeth in satisfaction and rubbed his palms together. “Excellent! …Welcome to the family.”

Technically this is canon written out in more detail. Between Starfox Assault and Starfox command, Fox kicked Krystal off the team fearing for her safety and she did join Starwolf till the players actions in command either force her to go rouge from both teams and remake herself as a new person entirely known as Kursed, Rejoin starfox, in which one ending she even marries and mothers his child, or stays with wolf and his team.

If I were Krystal, I would have just killed Wolf where he sat, killed the other members of Star Wolf, & took credit.
