Endless Realms bestiary - Xyl'r
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
In my opinion, one of the tougher monsters to design this block! Although it's not apparent from the image, the xyl'r is rather like a cross between the Lich King and the Zerg: at some point infected by undeath, or perhaps its undeath was "evolved", the xyl'r are undying and cannot be killed, only destroyed. They siphon and command spiritual energy around them, animating nearby corpses and literally sucking the life out of those around them, reducing them to soulless, undead thralls.

Bugs that are just a little hairy are the grossest lol. Bringing to mind pustules and tumors and other such nasty things. Clearly, not a monster we're supposed to snuggle x3
How big is this wicked thing? And if it drains life passively, does that make every battle with it sort of timed?

First thing I thought when I saw this was: Oh god the Zerg horde has taken over. Since it looked a little like an Infestor, a little queen, and Abathur. Which all make since with the characters description of taking over dead corpses because the Infestrors' can spawn infested Terrans, Queens control the horde under them, and Abathur is the master at mutating creatures within the zerg horde. I play starcraft to much xD
This is a great creature I wouldn't want to see or mess with. Since it absorbs spiritual energy would that mean that the shrine priests would lose a lot of power by being close to one of these crazy things. Absolutely a major boss. Maybe have it living inside of a dead tree to try to stay hidden as it infests the forest around it taking control of people and beasts.
Question time: Do the people it reanimate continue to have all of there powers? Like if it or its minions killed a player character would that dead character still be able to use it's spells, talents, and what not?

*chuckles* It wasn't super intentional - the art director wanted them kinda zergy, but I tried to make them seem a little bit more, hm, fleshy rather than chitinous, with a slight Lovecraftian feel. I definitely thought of Abathur, though :b I liked his character a lot in HotS.
Hah, I love your idea of it infesting an entire forest. Cool :b <3
As for the question, I have no idea! I don't normally have this much artistic liberty with creatures (I got to make the creatures up pretty much 100% for this block) - I'll normally do some conceptual work as I draw ("I imagine these thingies here are used by the creature to do X, while feature Y means it's good at Z") but I don't go really in-depth with it, usually. So I hadn't really thought about it enough to know the answer :V It's really up to the actual game designers to come up with a concept that's balanced and works within the system (since I don't actually really know the details of how ER's combat/magic system works).
