In my Fish Husbandry class we had to make a newsletter. Mine is on shark finning and other such evil deeds. So yea, Shark fins are sold for about $300 a pound. The process for getting those fins is very inhumane. They catch the sharks, remove their fins while they're still a live and toss them back into the ocean to pretty much drown because they can no longer move.
The Maybelline one is because that company and many others use the oil from the livers of sharks for their make-up. Their particular oil is also found in plants but getting it from the shark is apparently cheaper. Maybelline just recently with a few others said they'll discontinue the use of the shark liver oil for their products but conservationists think its more the fact that deep sea shark fishing is becoming more strict(deep sea sharks tend to have more of the oil in their livers and are targeted for the use of cosmetics more often) and costly. Not because they actually give a crap.
These 2 pictures were done for my newsletter because I needed to put something in it besides walls of texts and pictures of dead finless sharks.

For those curious. On the left is a leopard shark and the right is a blue shark.

Indeed, sadly shark finning is very unregulated in many areas. The US just this year finally made it illegal to de-fin sharks at sea. You must bring them back to shore before removing the fins. It cuts back on the amount of sharks taken because it's harder to transport whole sharks than just their fins.
It also cuts back on the amount of endangered species killed because having to bring the whole sharks back, people who are killing any shark for its fins can't hide if they kill any endangered species.

I was astounded at both the cruelty of shark finning, almost as surprised at the amount of people who react "Who cares---it's just a bunch of sharks."
I usually try to argue about the waste of it all, it tends to win more people over. I've had shark steak before & it was delicious. People like using shark teeth as decorations. Various fish organs & bones are used for all manner of things, and so can a shark's.
I realize the fins are more in demand, but really there's profit to be made with the entire fish. For shame.

Indeed and it wastes less if you use the parts these people end up tossing back after mutilating the poor thing. Sadly a lot of people don't want to use the effort. Hopefully the laws countries are trying to pass to ban finning at sea(the US just passed it this year) will cut back on the waste. With just fins the fisheries don't care if they're killing endangered species or not.
Yeah, and it's an area I hope to get into... I plan on studying in Marine Biology next year, and being a Shark enthusiast.. I'm quite against the whole "Farming" of anything in the ocean like Sharks, or Whales, and I've even been diving with Sharks, and I the only reason people think they are as "evil" as they are, is because of movies like Jaws... they are one of the most docile, and friendly things in the ocean, aslong as you don't do anything to annoy them.
It's also good to not make them think you're food.
The majority of shark attacks are a bite. The shark sees something that may be a seal. The go over take a bite and go.. "oh god, WTF is that?" and go to find real food.
The great white is an eating machine but they really do prefer their natural food over us.
A big thing is the lack of food they have. When there prey dwindles they resort to eating anything they can. I found a chart showing shark attacks off Florida. As the population went up the attacks went up(more people, more people getting bitten, makes sense) the deaths from the bites off the coast of Florida however did not increase. Pretty interesting finding proving they really don't like how we taste.
