So this is what goes one behind the process of concept work.
We were doing some kinda strategy game involving hamsters and I chose to do the religious fanatic faction. Much of the former work has been excised to this last stage before the game was left in development limbo.
1. starts with the basic idea, while other factions wear armor and ornate shit, I figured these buggers should look more low-tech and crazy. I went with religious scriptures for 'divine protection'. (Getting yourself shot meant you deserved it)
2. goes on expanding the idea a bit more, I added the heavy book for more sense of fanatic madness. I could've stopped here but the director wants them to 'carry more burden'.
3. goes about the burden way, with a collar and a weighted object.
The final version, which I don't have because it was passed on t a colleague do redo in his own style for consistency sake (there were 4 of us taking different factions), it looks more like the top left blue sketch minus the hood and a bigger book.
Below is a bunch of sketches of different weighted object designs.
Behind this is at least... I don't know, about 50 sketch revisions to get this far? It's never approved the first run, nothing is. This is about as glamorous as it gets.
I was thoroughly tempted to strap these little cute buggers with grenade vest since there was a sapper unit that does just that. But that'd be TOO politically touchy.
