Now this is a story of an alien boy who came down from the outer rim to see the frontiers of an expandin’ galaxy. He’s bein’ exposed to all kinds of interestin’ characters and odd sorts on his accidental adventure on the planet of Prospera. Along the way, he’ll understand the true importance of not only growin’ as a man (so to speak), but also the importance of keepin’ a gun on his hip. Yah gotta give it to Prospera, she’s on helluva beast to tame.

“Just great…” Cali’ bahn vas Tempest stated as the shuttle flamed in a heap. He had been on his pilgrimage for only a few months now and already he screwed up. He stayed at Illium for the beginning but quickly realized that there was little for him to do there, and instead elected to go to Eden Prime, the human colony. He always liked the humans as they were the kindest to his race. Newcomers tended to be that way to the quarians apparently, and an extranet friend informed him of some programing work out there that he could take part in; outsiders identifying outsiders he supposed. He was running low on the credits at the time, but some asari were offering cheap fare to ferry him across the galaxy there. However, it turned out that the asari were looking for a quick buck to purchase repairs for their ship, which would come too late as the ship malfunctioned and crashed while docking to refuel on the planet of Prospera. He and the crew were unharmed, but the ship was totaled.
“Aaaaand that sums up this place in its entirety.” Cal checked his tool, discovering that they had no extranet, or at least any public free kind, as was common on civilized planets. This place was anything but. The dock was in the middle of a dusty field, a dry desert with noting other than the small village before him within sight. In hindsight, the shuttle would have survived the crash if the dock was used and maintained as much as it should have been. After a few hours of watching the citizens work together as volunteers to clean up the mess in the “port” he decided to find a place to stay until the asari could find someone else to take them off world. He looked around at the prefab units, held together with supplemental logs to keep the building standing. The metal was shoddy, but the woodwork was phenomenal. There were a few store fronts: a tailor, a doctor (whom Cal hoped to never visit), a saloon/inn, and a general store. There was a strange building near the town’s court house, where a plume of smoke flew into the sky from a chimney. He would ask someone about it later, but at the moment, the saloon looked too appetizing to him. He walked down the center strip of the town. The buildings were on both sides of him. There were many that were closed down.
“What the hell is this place?” Cal thought as he walked on the porch of the saloon, already feeling his suit stiffen in the joints due to sand and dirt. He saw the door was a simple hinged piece of wood in a slightly decorative fashion. He pushed the double doors apart and stepped in. A piano played in the back by a singing female turian with blue facial markings. The patrons were diversifeied in species, with many humans, turians, asari, and even some krogan scattered throughout the saloon. He was unsettled by the fact that many of them were armed, mostly with pistols, but also some primitive looking rifles as well, strapped in leather holsters on her back. Many patrons looked up at him, mostly with disgust. Cal sighed, apparently these people weren’t so friendly to quarians too. He moved to the bar, where an indifferent bartender wiped the area before him with the towel. She was a turian, her face had red markings in a cross pattern.
“What’ll it be?” She asked casually.
“Um… can I get some dextro ale and some wa-” Cal began, when suddenly, a rowdy patron called out.
“Icky! Give me another round!” A human called out. He was clearly drunk. “Icky” apparently was tired of this and reached down below the counter as her eyes and nostrils flared up. She pulled out a strange looking shotgun with two barrels, and it was very long. She jabbed it towards the human who was now floundering on the bar in fear.
“Iccia…” She said simply, obviously on a hair trigger here currently. Cal jumped back in shock at her casualness with the firearm.
“I.. um… Okay I’ve had too much then!” The human exclaimed as he skittered out of the saloon. Some people took notice but didn’t mind. Iccia raised her shotgun on her shoulder with a smile.
“Were you going to say water fella’?” She said as she pulled a bottle out and set it on the table.
“I…uh… Yes ma’am!” Cal said, and he was happy she couldn’t see his look of fear.
“Don’t forget to pay your tab sugar.” She said and she tapped her gun with her finger. She then put it up and went to make him a glass of water.
Cal sighed and stuck his straw into the bottle after unsealing it. His straw had a filter in it for his safety in drinking these. As he sucked down the drink, he took in the crowd. Everyone was disgruntled, jaded, and simply lacking in cheer here. They all were so poor, it was apparent that his colony had supplied itself with everything it needed. There was some money here, definitely, once upon a time. He could tell in the décor, now growing dusty in the saloon. He also saw a game of cards being played in the corner. Cal was tempted by the devil himself to go to the table, but he reckoned that he had to be frugal with what money he had.
“You the poor spirit who got the bad luck out on the dock earlier today?” Iccia had said to him. Cal turned back around, his glowing eyes showing a raised eyebrow in a curious look.
“Yeah, talk about bad luck huh?” Cal said, takin’ another drink to soothe his nerves.
“Well I reckon you need a place to stay. Since yah got hit real hard sweetheart, I’ll only charge yah half price to stay. Spirit’s know yah gonna have a tough time ahead of yah.”
“You’d do that for me? Thank you! That’s the best news I’ve heard all day!” Cal said excitedly. He would take anything he could get at this point.
“It’s no trouble, I’ve been needin’ the customas anyways.” She said. “You gotta pay up front though.” Cal had no problem with this and processed the transaction through his credit chit. She showed him the way to his room, where he plopped himself in the bed. The sheets were clean, if a bit stale since they aren’t used too often. Of course, Cal wasn’t too worried about it. He’d been up for so long and he was ready to sleep. After eating a small ration he kept on his person, he practically passed out on top of the covers.
…
The next morning, Cal awoke, his filters slightly clogged and giving him some dry smelling air. He moaned as his joints ached from the old bed and sat up. He spent a few moments adjusting himself when he heard the sounds of a shuttle engine outside. That was fast! He thought to himself.
Cal went outside, the town a little dead aside from the occasional person strolling down through the street. He saw the two asari approaching the shuttle as well and was about to make conversation with them when he noticed their glances at them. They seemed embarrassed, afraid… mischievous? They picked up their pace, and Cal did the same calling out to them as they tried to pack up their stuff faster as if they were going to leave him. Cal panicked and broke into a sprint.
“Hey, you guys aren’t leaving me are you?!” He shouted at them. He saw them sigh and one turned to him to speak.
“Listen, we’re sorry but we can only afford the fare for two off this rock.”
“What? You said you couldn’t pay for anything but repairs! How are you paying for this?” The two awkwardly stood in silence when Cal realized. “Hang on, I didn’t pay you two to leave me on a deserted planet!” Cal said, rage growing inside him.
The asari ignored him, closing the cargo hatch, infuriating Cal more. He put his hand on her shoulder to get her attention, but she threw him away with a small biotic pulse. Cal felt like he was hit with a train, and flew a couple of feet in the air at the hit, his wind leaving his chest as he hit the ground with a thud.
“Don’t touch me suit rat!” The asari said as they dismissed him and boarded the shuttle, flying off quickly without him.
Now Cal was stuck with no money, and no way off the planet. He felt heavy, and depressed by this, but also enraged at them for leaving him alone.
“Wow, off-worlders can be downright pieces of shit cant they?” a deep voice sounded behind Cal. He turned around to see a krogan wearing industrial coveralls. He looked like a smith of sorts. The krogan held out his hand to Cal, who accepted it and felt the massive fingers wrap around his hand. He was easily pulled up to his feet, his shoulders slumped from the earlier defeat.
“Thanks.” He said simply, not feeling too talkative. The krogan smiled and patted him on the back.
“Cheer up, we aren’t that bad here. We’re quite friendly actually. Name’s Desh.” The krogan said. Cal rubbed where he was patted, obviously sore there now.
“Cali’bahn vas Tempest, Cal for short.” He said. “Where exactly am I anyway?”
“Heh, no need to show off with the long name.” Desh said. “You’re in the town of Iris on Prospera.”
“Hm… I don’t suppose there is much here in the line of work is there? I need to pay for a way out of here soon.” Cal said. Desh gave a hum of thought. He looked at the strange building out by the hall, and then back at Cal.
“How heat resistant is your suit Cal?”
“It can hold up to seven hundred kelvin before the fabric melts. What exactly am I doing for you?” Cal asked, cocking his head and raising an eyebrow. His suit was tough enough to keep him safe in space should he decide to step into it, and it could handle the heat that came with direct exposure to stars.
“Well, I could always use extra help with the fabricator, and you’re the most heat resistant person here now. The pay won’t be too good though, only enough to get you a place at the Inn and normal necessities.” Desh said with a hearty chuckle. “But it might be entertainin’ to have a protégé for a while.”
Cal internally screamed at himself. Hard labor?! Fuck! He tried to maintain his composure and sighed.
“It’s better than nothing.” He conceded.
…
“The first thing I’m gonna teach you to make is our most common commodity.” Desh said as he hit a few buttons on the odd fabricator. “Guns.”
Desh went through the basic steps of the fabricator, and how it used heated eezo to alter metals into making strong materials. The key was the sand, as it was specially composed on this planet with eezo, iridium, and an unknown element.
“That’s strange.” Cal said in response to learning this. “Wouldn’t the new element attract business and not leave this place so… unpopulated?”
“Ah, they didn’ care about that shit, they only came here for the eezo, but once the mines ran dry on that stuff, the companies simply left, along with all the business. Now, all that’s left are people forced to settle this barren land.” Desh said.
They continued to work several hours, until the final result was complete. Cal held in his hand a Prospera favorite. A revolver style hand cannon. In each chamber, a thermal clip is inserted, allowing there to be two types, of hand guns: high power or high capacity. Cal elected to go with a more moderate decision: an eighteen shot weapon (three shots with each of the six clips in one rotary) with a six o’ clock positioned barrel. It was finely crafted, thanks to Desh’s experienced guidance and Cal’s “natural talent” at the fabrication.
Cal was in awe of the creation. He had actually made something! And it was an excellent marvel of design as well. However, as Cal looked at the weapon, he was somehow reminded of his home ship: the Tempest. It was a human vessel that was reputable being practically incapable of overheating thanks to the cooling system adapted for the ship.
“Well, it was more fun than I was expecting!” Cal said, almost happy at his situation now. “Who did we make this weapon for anyway?”
“Look in a mirror and yer bound to find out.”
“Desh, I can’t pay for this gun.” Cal said, a little concerned.
“And you can’t be livin’ here without one. Consider it a welcome gift!” Des said, patting Cal on his back again.
“… I’ve never used a gun before.” Cal said, starting to feel the weight of his new weapon. Desh took a moment to laugh at Cal’s apprehension.
“That’s lesson two.”

I finally got the chance to read this! You've captured the feel of the setting very well, especially in the prologue and the scen at the bar before the protagonist goes to bed. A turian gal with a shotgun as the bartender is such an endearing mental image. x3
I feel bad for Cal though, but at least he's finding new friends, right?
