The Donkey Inside
By born2beagator and JacktheLizard
My name is Jason. I live in North Carolina. Out in the farm country. Let’s just say I’m having a case of species confusion. I’m human of course. But whenever I drive by a pasture with a donkey in it, I’ll feel...strange. I’ll slow down, and stare at it. Strange feelings well up inside me when I am around donkeys. Sometimes I’ll let out a mock bray. Others is more...intense. In fact today was the worst...or maybe the best. I don’t know.
There is a donkey farm near my neighborhood, and today when I drove by, I stopped. Not just slowed down, but pulled over on the side of the road. From there I got out and just stared at the donkeys for a while...and then it got weird. I felt an intense yearning to be with those donkeys. I acted on it.
I climbed through the fence and went up to a big jack. The animal looked at me curiously, then snorted in my nose. I laughed, a donkey greeting is what that was. From there I found myself on my hands and knees in the middle of the herd. Grazing. Yes, grazing. I had my face to the ground, pulling up grass with my teeth, chewing...and swallowing. Occasionally I’d let out a mock bray. This went on for a good hour before I snapped out of it.
Getting in my car, all I could do was sit there and reflect on what I had just done. I’d been part of a herd of donkeys. I had acted just like one of them and they had treated me like one of them...and I was pretty sure I had used the bathroom out there once too. I shook my head. Luckily I had a good friend named Roddy who was always there for me when I needed to talk to him….and that brings us to the present.
Coming up to his house, I knock on the door. Roddy opened it up. Roddy was a five foot ten blond, slightly overweight with mussed hair and a bemused smile.
“You have green stains around your lips.” He said.
I sighed. How to explain this to him? “We need to talk. Is anyone home?” Roddy shook his head.
“I’m all alone. Are you going to explain...your attire? It’s rumpled.”
I looked down and smooth it out. “Umm...I took a nap in it.” Roddy nodded.
“You took a nap in the grass?”
“What makes you think that?” I asked, still trying to stall until I figured it out...stall..that sounded good right now...a nice-what!? I bit the thought down.
“You have blades of grass stuck in your hair for one thing.” Roddy said. “Come on in.”
I nodded and headed into his house. It was an old style, country house, wood walls, wood floors, very homey...and in the back his pasture. A donkey. I sit down heavily. I really didn’t need to see a donkey right now. Yes you did, you love donkeys! I shake my head again and put the thoughts out, staring into space.
Roddy sat down in the living room, on a couch that faced a bay window. The window looked out on the pasture in all its glory. “Great view isn’t it?”
“Yes it is...listen, how bad is the green stain on my lips?”
“It’s like a green dye all around your lips, in a circle. Some on your chin, like you drooled green.”
I sigh. No use stall-er waiting any longer. “I probably did.” Roddy frowned.
“Say what?”
“Roddy, I was eating grass.” I say heavily. Roddy’s eyebrows raised. Though he seemed unsurprised, his hand gripped the couch.
“You...ate grass. Like a donkey?”
“Or a horse, cow, insert grazing animal here.” Roddy crossed his legs and leaned back. His mind was trying to process.
“I prefer bulls to donkeys personally.”
“You know that donkey farm down the street?”
“I can’t believe you grazed...uh yeah?”
“Not only did I graze. I grazed with a herd of donkeys. I felt like one of them, and they treated me like one of them.” I said. There, proverbial cat out of the bag. Roddy nodded his head slowly.
“So...how do you view yourself?”
“I...I don’t know. I’m obviously human. But recently I feel strange around donkeys. Like I belong with them. Today that feeling got so strong I actually grazed with a herd of them” Roddy nodded.
“Do you think you are a donkey? Be honest, deep down.”
“Wait...this isn’t weird to you?” I asked in shock.
“Jason, I got paid to review TV shows for a living.” Roddy said, “They paid me to sit on my ass-”
“Hee-haw!” I suddenly blurted. I covered my mouth in embarrassment. Roddy smiled at this.
“I find this endlessly amusing. You have a donkey inside you. Why now?”
“I have no clue. But that mock bray you just heard? Those slip out on a regular basis. You still don’t find this weird? This isn’t TV Roddy, its real life.” Roddy shrugged.
“Jason, you know you’re my friend right?”
“Of course! But this goes into the realm of the supernatural. Someone acting like a donkey, eating grass, it's not normal...is it?” I ask, confused.
“Not a clue.” Roddy said, “Actually a big clue. Something is seriously wrong. But...I don’t know. I’m not feeling it?”
“I know you aren’t. But I am. Vividly. When I was with those donkeys...I felt free. I felt at home. With animals Roddy!” I said, a little frantically. Roddy nodded.
“Is that bad?”
I lick my lips, savoring the grassy taste still there, not hearing Roddy. Not hearing anything really, other than the sound of rushing blood. The air felt colder on my ears now, I could hear it blowing into them...yet my ears felt pleasantly warm. I cocked my head to the side a bit. Roddy’s eyes went wide.
“I’m sorry, what did you say Roddy?” Roddy cocked his head with mine.
“Your ears...you have donkey ears.”
I laugh. “Dude, this is serious. Stop joking.” Roddy nodded. He then reached out above my head, grabbed a furry part of my anatomy (!) and yanked.
“Heeeee-HAWWWW!!!!!” I blurt out in pain. Roddy smiled.
“Still doubt me?”
I jump up and run to a mirror. My human ears are gone. In their place...is a pair of foot long, gray furred donkey ears. I touch the messy fur inside them and they twitch away of their own accord. “What the!!!!”
“What do you think?” Roddy asked.
“I just grew donkey ears and you are asking me what I think!? You aren’t panicking?” Roddy shrugged.
“They fit you?”
“I...I feel the same way!?” I say in shock. I plop down on the couch, confused. Roddy nodded.
“What did you feel when your ears changed?”
“I felt like a part of me was being corrected.” I say earnestly. Roddy nodded.
“These are your true ears then?”
“This is beyond surreal...but yes!” I say, rubbing them. “My true ears are big, floppy donkey ears!”
“Then that means the rest of you is wrong isn’t it?” Roddy asked.
“So those feelings, when I was with those donkeys…” I look up. “Can we just...talk?” Roddy nodded.
“Bray away.”
“I just love everything about donkeys! So much. Bordering on obsession. No...it is an obsession.” Roddy nodded.
“And...what? You want me to fix this?”
“I just want you to talk to me about them. To know I’m not going crazy.” I say as I run my hands up my ears in awe.
“You just grew donkey ears! I think you aren’t going crazy.”
“Thanks. They just feel so right. The weight on the sides of my head feels like it should have always been there.” I say happily, starting to get over the shock. “I’m a little scatterbrained right now though...so can you lead this conversation? I don’t even know where to start I just love everything about them!”
“Well, what do you like about their ears?” Roddy asked.
“I guess its our ears now.” I say with a laugh. I run my hands up and down, and the ears twitch at their touch. I put a finger in one, and feel the messy fur… “Just...how long they are. Flexible...the messy fur on the inside, how they can swivel…”
“Swivel them.” Roddy said.
I try to focus on them, but nothing happens. “Hmmm...I think they turn to catch sounds!” Roddy smiled.
“Yes they do. They let you cool off, they look good on your head.”
Something clicks in my mind and I smile widely. I look in the mirror in adoration at my long gray ears. Giggling, I sit back down. “So Roddy, you seem to want to help me...become a donkey.”
“I want you to be happy.” Roddy said, “Would being a donkey make you happy?”
I think back to how i felt in the pasture. “More than anything.” I suddenly blurt. Roddy raised an eyebrow.
“Think about donkeys. What else draws your eyes to them?”
“That ropey tail, with a tassel on the end.” I say immediately. Roddy nodded, I readjusted in my seat.
“The ropey tail, is the fact that it’s ropey special? Do you want to have a tail with a tassel? Why that one, why is it so good?”
I think. I’d never really given that much thought. I blush. “Umm…Well I like the way it's short fur most of the way, then that thick tassel on the bottom? I’m not really sure.” I felt a pain in my rear end. Readjusting didn’t do anything, it kept stabbing at me.
“Something wrong?” Roddy asked.
“I’m just trying to think of why I really love their tail over other animal tails. It’s just not something I’ve given a lot of thought to before.” I felt something sliding out under me and the pain began to increase.
“You look uncomfortable.” Roddy said.
I felt like I was sitting on something in my pants. “I’m okay. Just really trying to put my finger on why I love their tails so much.” Now my pants began to strain, my legs began to go numb as all feeling went into my rear.
“You want to stand up?”
“No thanks, this feels good actually.” I say as my eyes flutter a bit. “I just can’t get my mind off those tails!” I readjusted again, this time I felt less pain (though it was still there). Now I felt something hairy pressed against the back of my right leg.
“And you want a tail of course.” Roddy said.
“I do….so much. It will make me more like them.” I say wistfully. Roddy nodded.
“I bet you can almost feel one can’t you?”
“Mmmmm...yeah. Ropey...furry...that smooth tassel...so animalistic!” I said blissfully. Roddy smiled.
“Tell me how it feels.” The tail squirmed in my pants.
My eyes closed as I imagined it. “Mmmmm...I would be able to feel the muscles straining, moving the tail, swaying back and forth…” Roddy cocked his head.
“Back and forth...could you say...strain to the right?”
Still lost in bliss, I was able to imagine the feeling vividly, it was as if I had a tail in my pants straining to the right, just like he said. Roddy’s jaw dropped.
“How would you want...your tail to come out?”
“Well, a couple of ways. The obvious is the burst method, just breaking through the pants. The second, would be for it to go down my pant leg, then have to pull it out.” I said wistfully.
“Well...what about a combination?” Roddy asked. “Go down your leg, then rip and split your pants in half?”
I looked at him in shock. “You’ve given this a lot of thought.”
“Would that interest you?”
“Greatly. If it could happen of course.” I said sadly. Roddy laughed.
“Seriously? Dude you grew donkey ears!”
I felt my ears and smiled. “Point taken.” Roddy tapped his chin.
“What if we ran a little experiment?”
“Sure, I trust you.” Roddy smiled. He gestured for me to stand up. I did as I was told. “Now, strain your butt, strain every muscle, push them all out.”
I strained as hard as I could in my lower body...and felt something move. “Wha-?” The back of my pants bulged and receded. Roddy laughed.
“Feel something?”
“I-I-I do!”
“Then keep pushing.” Roddy said.
I nodded, and strained as hard as I could. The new appendage moved up-up-up against the base of my pants. It strained, forced and then….RIP! My eyes shot open...and out they came. “Heeeee-HAWWWWWW-hee-HAWWWWWWW-heeee-HAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!”
“Wow…” Roddy grinned, watching the tail swing back and forth. “How did that feel?”
But I wasn’t done yet. The tail bursting out had me still in my fit of braying. I couldn’t stop. Roddy stood up and came over to me. He started to scratch my big ears. This seemed to help. Finally the brays stopped and I let my ear lean into his scratching.
“How does that feel?”
I looked back at the gray furred appendage. Picking it up in my hands, I laughed as I felt muscles in it twitch. Rubbing my hand down the length, I marveled at how I could feel my hand through my tail...and the tassel on the end, so smooth. “It’s everything I imagined it would be and more.”
“It’s a growth out of your ass.”
“It’s so much more than that! It’s..it’s my tail! Tails are one of the main things that separates humans from animals!” I said reverently.
“And now that you have one, you are no longer human?”
“What other human has a tail?” I ask pointedly. “I just...I want this to keep going!” Roddy sighed and nodded.
“Will you be happy to lose your mind?”
“To be a happy, braying animal? Yes!” I suddenly said with absolute confidence.
“But how can you be happy as an animal? You can’t feel anything!”
“Sure I can! I experienced it already. When I was with that herd of donkeys earlier. I felt calm, at peace...at home. There are so many things I could do! Pleasure would come from the feeling of grass and hay sliding down my throat. From braying, just to see how loud I can bray...from the touch of a jenny!”
“But it’s mindless.” Roddy said. “You can’t experience the joys a human does.”
I nod. “But Roddy, I already experienced the joys of being a donkey. They are much simpler...and more beautiful. There is nothing quite like grazing with your herd. It gives you a sense of belonging. Of being wanted.” I said with a smile.
“You haven’t been one yet.” Roddy said.
“That drive over here, when I grazed with the donkeys...for all intents and purposes, I was one mentally. My mind emptied with the first bite of grass. A donkey snorted in my nose, I snorted back in greeting. A foal nuzzled me. And from there I just...grazed. I just kinda was. As in I was in the moment, not caring about what happened a minute down the road.”
“You wanted to stay there didn’t you?” Roddy asked.
“Yes. It was incredibly hard to get up and leave.” Roddy nodded.
“When you were among them, what else did you feel? Physically I mean.”
My new tail was swaying behind me freely. It was...a strange sensation. “Well nothing as real as what I feel now. But I felt wrong. As if I was in the wrong body.” Roddy nodded.
“Question, could you possibly cross your legs Jason?”
“Why?”
“Your pants have split and ripped off.” Roddy said, “You do realize you’re nude from the bottom down right?”
“Actually, I didn’t.” I said, a slight itching beginning at the base of my tail. Roddy scooted back slightly.
“Doesn’t being nude bother you?”
“I didn’t even notice Roddy.” I said with a slight huff.
“It bothers me! Put some pants on man!”
“But they will get in the way of my tail! I don’t have any pants with a tail hole. I’m sure you don’t either.” Roddy grit his teeth.
“You want to finish changing don’t you?”
“Yes. I want to be a donkey...so much. And now that I know I can be one physically AND mentally...I’ll do anything.” I said earnestly. Roddy shook his head.
“I don’t understand...okay where were we with changing you?”
“What don’t you understand?” I asked curiously, wrapping a towel around my waist for Roddy.
“I don’t understand how you can want to be a dumb animal.” Roddy said. “You’ll never appreciate beauty again.”
“I don’t want beauty. I want...I want to belong. The feeling I got when I was with that herd. It was exquisite. I felt like I’d never be lonely again. It was more than I’ve felt with any human.”
“And you can’t belong with humans at all?”
“After that? I don’t want to. I want to be part of a herd.” Roddy nodded.
“Then let’s get back to how the donkeys looked. What next drew your attention to them?”
“Their coarse fur. No need for clothes...I’d want to be gray.” Roddy nodded.
“Gray, okay I can work with that. Describe their fur to me.”
“Well...it’s soft up around the ears. But in most places its rather coarse...like running your hands through a brush. It’s not as sleek as horse fur.”
“Isn’t being coarse a bad thing?”
“No...um...It’s fur. That’s what matters.” Roddy nodded.
“Well, focus on the fur. Focus on it appearing. Where would it come first?”
“Well no hair...what so many people miss is the hide. Before any fur could come out, the skin would have to toughen up to support it.” I shake my head. “I can’t believe this is really happening. This is the best day of my life.”
“Tell me about your hide then.” Roddy said.
“Well..if I had hide, it would be dark, almost black. And tough, very tough.” My skin trembled at the thought.
“What else?”
I put a hand to my head. All this thinking is making it ache. “I don’t know, suffice to say I want hide...and fur covering it!” My arms began to darken in color. Roddy smilled.
“Fur would come second though wouldn’t it?”
“It would. Hide would be under it.” Roddy nodded. He reached out and tapped on my arm.
“Would hide dull your sense of touch?”
“I don’t know, I’ve never had it before.” Roddy tapped on my arm some more, then scratched it. I barely felt it.
“What do you think of that?”
“What?” I ask curiously, tail waving behind me in contentment. This was the life, just me and my friend talking about donkeys.
“Your new hide?” Roddy asked. “You did notice right?”
I looked down at my arms...my skin was black and very rough. “This...this is happening! I’m really becoming an ass! How is this possible?” I asked, tail still swaying happily.
“You didn’t notice till now?” Roddy exclaimed. “You grew a tail!”
A tear slid down my cheek. “I...I...I’m so happy Roddy. This is a dream come true.” Roddy brushed it away, shaking his head as he did.
“You’re giving up your humanity.”
But I ignored him. “I never have to work again...never have to pay bills again...just be with my herd!” Roddy shuddered.
“It’s a precious gift you moron and you’re tossing it away!”
“This is the gift for me Roddy!” I say happily. “I want this...so much. Now my acting can be real!” Roddy shook his head.
“Fine. Act out a fur coat and let’s finish this.”
Suddenly I take my shirt off revealing my dark hide. “How would I act out a fur coat? I’ve never done this for reeeeeeee-HAWWWWWW!” My eyes rolled up in happiness at the animal sound I made. Roddy’s eyes bulged out.
“That’s it! I am so done with this dude.” He stood up.
“Pleeeeeee-HAW!” I cough. “Please Roddy! I want this!”
“Dude you’re fucking braying! This is freaking me out.”
“I’m becoming a donkey! Of course I’m braying! Look...just think of me as an animal if it helps!” I plead. “I need to be a donkey!” I looked out to the jenny. “I want to live with her!”
“You want to live with my jenny?”
I blush, hard to see on my dark hide, but it’s there. “Yeah...what’s her name? Can you introduce me?”
“Her name is Shelly.” Roddy said. “How do you introduce a donkey?”
“You just bring me to her, you are her owner, when we get close I snort in her nose.” I say as if it’s the simplest thing in the world.
“You do what now?”
“Snort in her nose! It’s how we greet each other!” I said happily, starting to itch at my hide lightly.
“That sounds terrible.” Roddy said.
I itch harder. “No it isn’t!” I say, scratching all over. “We can tell a lot about each other by the smell of our breath!” I think stop and blink. “Ha...we! I already see myself as one of them!” Roddy just shook his head.
“Alright what do you want to do next?”
“Itch!” I say frantically, scratching furiously over my hide. Roddy reached out and plucked one fast growing black hair.
“Wow this is growing fast.” Roddy said. A forest of black fur began to sprout from my hide. “How are you dealing with it?”
“Itching.” I replied. “And knowing that Shelly will find me handsome.” Roddy reached over and rubbed my belly. Where his hand touched my flesh, white fur sprouted.
“This pains me.” He said.
“Why? You are getting a new donkey for free! Oh...yeah! That’s the spot...just a little more!” Roddy rubbed up my belly and chest, creating a white underside. When he finished my fur coat had as well.
“You’ve still got that stupid shirt on.” Roddy said. He stood up, “Let me get some scissors for you, hold on.”
I shift from foot to foot nervously. What if Shelly doesn’t like my fur color? She is brown...I’m black. Roddy returned with a pair of scissors.
“Here ya go, cut your shirt off.” He said, handing them to me.
I try to grab the scissors but there is no feeling in my hands and I drop them. Roddy looked at my hands as the middle fingers began to expand.
“Let me guess, you’re getting hooves?”
“IEEEEE-HAWWW!” I bring my stiffening hands to my mouth. The center fingers on both hands expanded more, merging with the other fingers. My nails consumed my hands, turning them into two stiff gray masses.
“Your feet have changed also.” Roddy said. “How do you feel?”
“Like...like an animal.” I say earnestly. Roddy cocked his head.
“What was that?”
“What was what?” I ask curiously, cocking my own head in a very equine fashion. Roddy snorted.
“Dude I can’t understand you. Do you think you’re speaking English?”
I make a conscious effort. “Understand now?” Rody scratched his head.
“Barely.” Roddy said. “You’re starting to break into brays.”
I giggle. “Sorry. I guess I have to think about english to talk it not...how do I sound?”
“Very hoarse.” Roddy said. “I can barely understand you.”
Suddenly I blank. “Getting hard to think….” I say. Roddy had now started to cut my shirt off and threaded my forelegs through it.
“Well just do what comes naturally.”
“I...I want to be on four legs. Like a donkey...like a dumb animal!” I say shakily. Roddy took a step back and gestured at the ground.
“Then be a dumb animal.”
I nod and slowly lower myself to my hands and knees. Except getting off a couch when your center of mass is changing isn’t easy. I flipped instead and landed on the flour with a loud CLOP!
“I’ve got a donkey in my living room.” Roddy said. “This is utterly insane.”
I look down at the dull hooves that had replaced my hands. “I feel...so stupid! Look at me! I’m a beast!”
“Well at least you can still talk.” Roddy said, triggering dramatic irony.
“Being on all fours makes me want to...to…..AWW-HEEEEEE-HAWWWWW!!!!!!!” My mouth jerked forward. Roddy took a step back.
“Dude!”
“HEEEEE-HAWWWW!” My nose expanded to massive size, completely consuming my upper lip. My mouth flowed out into a broad muzzle, perfect for an equine. A donkey. I am a donkey.
Roddy came over slowly and touched my neck, “You still with me man?”
I look at my owner with a goofy smile. My eyes burned slightly but I couldn’t see why. Roddy could though. “You have brown...no almost black eyes. Wow.”
I cock my head at my owner. I can’t understand human words, what is he trying to tell me. “Heee-haw???” I bray in confusion.
“I suppose you want out.” Roddy sighed and gestured. “Please follow me.” He walked over to the back door and opened it.
I clopped through my owner’s house and out the back door. Why was I in there? I should always be outside.
“Have fun buddy.” Roddy mumbled. “You earned it I guess.”
I look at my owner in confusion. This wasn’t my pasture. My owner walked ahead, over to the fence separating me from my pasture. He opened it up and ushered me inside.
I trotted in and brayed contentedly when I heard the gate shut behind me. Another bray echoed through the pasture. I looked up.
Shelly, my owner’s donkey and now my jenny brayed at me. She slowly trotted over and pressed her muzzle against mine. I snorted in her nose, a happy greeting. I was a very lucky Jack indeed!

While I admit I'm not a fan of extreme mental change, I do still think you did a good job showing the chance. I do like that it was a willing change though. Those types are always a lot more fun to read then ones where the person dislikes it, fights it the entire way and even after never seems willing to find even the smallest thing about being a donkey that's actually good.
