Endless Realms bestiary - Grootslang
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Today's monstrosity is an enormous, Jormungandr-like cryptid from Africa, thought to have existed since the beginning of time, and dwelling within a great cave beneath the earth. It is feared and loathed for its horrific strength and cruel intellect - it is said the gods desperately tried to unmake the Grootslang shortly after its birth, appalled by its boundless malevolence, and broke the creature into its component parts to create elephants and serpents, yet one escaped destruction and lives on today to haunt locals. Despite its love for cruelty, the Grootslang is said to be pliable should you have enough precious gems to placate it.
In creating the Grootslang, I tried to think of what elements are most prominent for each animal - I wanted to combine the long, powerful, serpentine body, cold inhuman gaze, and frightening fangs of snakes with the immense physical presence and strength of elephants, featuring their flaring ears, trampling feet, goring tusks and of course, grasping trunk. Other images of the Grootslang I found featured the trunk as the nose or chin of the snake, but I thought using it as an Alien-esque protrusion from the mouth was the creepiest application :b

Darling hon.. you've got FOUR Toes on the leg in the foreground.. but only THREE Toes on the foot that's behind it.. shouldn't there be a *HINT* of a fourth toe behind the big middle one.. even if it's just a point peeking out as the foot is splayed somewhat sideways?
*Takes a few steps back and lays the bag of treasure on the ground.* No one is going to die...no one is going to die. *Bolts for the exit*
I've never heard of something like this before and just the thought of running into one of these is terrifying. I wouldn't want to fight it since it has that club like tail, and that tongue that would spear you a live. Although I think it would be interesting to have this go against Loki.

Heh, yeah - I think Loki would win, what with being a god-type character, and having magic, whereas the grootslang is just thought of as a horrific creature. I mean, I don't know if they're really supposed to be magical in real life, but nothing stopping the ones in the games! Now that would be upsetting to come across - a grootslang with magic :b
