Welcome to Those Who Have Passed - A Twice Weekly Illustration Project!
The goal of this project is to have 100 illustrations of animals, from megafauna to the tiniest insect, that have been relegated to the fossil record, completed by this blogs end. It’s partly an exercise in my own artistic ability and partly an attempt to spread some information about the current plight that human civilization has put upon the planet we live on. I’ve always been fascinated with extinction and evolution since I was a wee lad, so I thought I’d share that love.
What is the Holocene Extinction?
The Holocene Epoch, a geological division within the Quaternary period that’s within the Cainozoic Era (bare with me), began about 10,000 years ago around the ending of the last Ice Age. Though heavily debated in the scientific community, the consensus states that human civilization has been a large factor in the overwhelming extinction rate. At 10,000 times the normal background extinction rate, species have come and gone sometimes without even being recorded adequately by humankind. This, in such a short time geologically speaking, has been of growing concern especially in the last two centuries with human resource usage overwhelming the earth and with climate change beginning to rock animal populations far faster than ever anticipated.
What Can I Expect From This Blog?
For the most part, twice weekly black and white illustrations with minimal colour usage of an animal that has since passed on to the photographic and fossilized record. While I may miss an installation or two, keep in mind I work full time and do this for free and for fun!
How Can I Support This Project?
By being the lovely followers you are and liking, sharing, and generally being enthusiastic about evolution, nature, and all things biology!
Cheers!
Nate
