I suggest starting with composition, that way you don't have to rely purely on remixing etc.
A good daw to use is FL Studio, if you can't afford it you can use the demo until you get good.
When you get good with making original compositions, start working with Equalizers and work your way into effects such as delay and reverb, the rest aren't too important but can add something interesting to a sound if used correctly.
If you are recording your material using a microphone, work on reducing the amount of noise being recorded (through EQ or through physical objects and positioning).
If you are recording your material using digital synthesizers/samples/etc., start with the square wave as it's the easiest waveform to work with and your track will still sound good if you have a good composition.
