July 8th 5:30pm pst Las Vegas, Nevada
Talk of the tourney was filling the air as everyone left the park. After an hour of some intense basketball, people were extremely excited about tomorrow's finals. All... except for Jonathan Lawyer.
Ever since his team was eliminated from the Vegas tourney, the young meerkat became very bitter. Not only did they lose on a last second three point, but he was clearly the worst on the court that day. No matter what he would do, he had no answers on offense or defense against the former MVP Rocky Caracal. The matchup looked like exactly how everyone predicted, A superstar going against an untested rookie. Jon didn’t just hated it. He despised it.
As he exited the park, Lawyer picked up his phone and began to dial Agundio Atti-Morales’ number. Since it’s been around a half an hour since the ending of the semifinals, he’s sure to be walking out of the locker room.
The phone rang for a couple of seconds, and then he heard the click. “Hello?”
“Yo Aggie,” The meerkat said. “It’s Jon here, you still want to meet up later right?”
“Oh! Jon!” The hybrid’s tone seemed rather pleased. “Yes, I would like that indeed. I imagine the others will be off to party. We had a rather successful game, after all!”
Jon groaned a little bit, he’s glad that the hybrid’s team took out the guys that kicked him out. However, it stilled killed him that it wasn’t -his- team moving on. He cleared his throat trying to hide the groan he did. “Y-yeah I saw. Congrats man, you guys definitely deserved to be in big dance! Heh..”
“Thank you,” said Agundio. “I was going to run back to my hotel room and then take in some dinner. Perhaps you can join me?”
“Sure. You can text me the info, and I’ll see you in a couple of hours.”, Jon says with a small smile on his face.
“Of course, Jon,” he said. “I’ll see you then.”
7:32 pm pst
Jon looked at his phone for a couple of minutes as he was walking down the hall, making sure he was going to the right room. As soon as he spotted it he took a deep breath. He wasn’t sure how this is going to go.
He did not have to wonder too much, though, for he saw Agundio standing right under the marquee. After a few seconds, the avian noticed Jon, smiling as he stepped out from under the sign saying Gordon Ram’s Burger.
“Jon!” said Agundio as he held his hand out. “Glad you could make it.”
Jon smiled a tad nervously as he put his paws out in the air and waved at the hybrid. “Yo!!”, He called out.
Agundio smiled, grabbing Jon’s paw and shaking it. “You know, with language like that, I can see you getting on rather well with my brother Pietro,” he said. “It’s a shame he couldn’t come to this.” He nodded, stepping into the restaurant as Jon followed. “Come, let’s sit, no?”
Jon chuckled for a bit. “Well of course. It would’ve been sweet to meet ya bro.” He said as he followed the avian to a table as he took a seat. He looked down at the menu that was already placed and smiled. “Man, all this looks good as hell!! You picked a pretty chill place man!!”
“Well, I have indeed heard good things about the place,” said Agundio. He then shrugged. “Though, personally, I’m also more interested to see if the proprietor does indeed know what he’s talking about. You do have to wonder what it is that makes him constantly use profanity on the television.”
Jon scratched his head a little. “Heh wouldn’t really know myself to be honest. Maybe cussin’ is another way to get people interested?” Jon said laughing at himself. “Sounds stupid I know, but in this day of age just about anything can get people hooked.”
“And there are drawbacks to that,” Agundio said, looking through the menu. “Hm… Admittedly, some of these look rather tasty, though.”
He then sat back as the waitress came back and took their orders.
Jon cleared his throat a bit as he took a sip of his water. “So… uh… How you feeling about your shot against the canine crew tomorrow?” Jon said said softly.
Agundio nodded, sipping his own water. “I feel fairly confident,” said Agundio. “We did have matches against the likes of Rocky Caracal and Godfrey Zindendel, after all, so I feel confident. As well, our team chemistry finally came together…” His expression fell. “Though, to be honest, it was an uphill battle to find it.”
Jon clenched his cup tight without realizing it. “Yeah… uh… that’s good on ya. I know Sterls can be a dick, but he is pretty good just like you and the rest of team blue. So I knew you guys would find that click sooner or later.”
“He can be a little… difficult,” Agundio admitted. “But he certainly can play, I will say that.” He then leaned forward, having noticed how Jon clenched his hand around the cup. “But this isn’t necessarily about me. Something was bothering you. What’s wrong?”
Jon looked away, sighing in frustration. He knew this was going to be discussed eventually, but he still hated that he had to talk about it. He took another sip of water and began to speak. “I fucking sucked at that tourney… If I didn’t look like a freaking train wreck against Caracal, I know for a fact we would have taken them out easy.”
Agundio nodded, bowing his head. “I shouldn’t think you were terrible,” said Agundio. “You did have good games before that point, no?”
“In the practice game we had yeah.. but that’s just it, Practice.” The meerkat said. “That game against the damn Caracal riders was a huge chance for me to prove that I can handle anybody out there… but I didn’t just blow it. I was creamed, embarrassed, and outplayed. He made me look like a chump, and I have no one to blame but myself for that.”
“Well, to be fair, you were playing against last year’s MVP,” said Agundio with a small nod. “I hardly think anyone blames you for that. And aside from that…” Agundio shrugged. “Sterling himself noted something when his father formed our team strategy: it was Caracal carrying them that particular match. And… well, much as I am loathe to speak in this way of others, there were people on Rocky’s team that did worse than you did.”
“But they still won, It’s a no brainer he and Yves was carrying that team…” Jon leaned back. “and honestly, I don’t give a shit if it’s Healey Davis in his prime years. I had to my job in keeping him under control, and I failed. Getting 24 points scored on ya is not a good feeling… I know I can do better. I’m not gonna let that MVP bull shit be an excused for not doing my job. If I thought like that… I don’t belong in the FBA. That’s the honest truth.”
“Perhaps not,” said Agundio. “But you can be too harsh on yourself, I find.” He leaned back. “I should say that I would’ve felt similarly if I had lost against Zindendel in the first round. But…” He nodded, clearing his throat. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Jon smirked a little. “Heh… you and your bible quotes.” Jon said chuckling a bit. “But I guess you’re right… I just really want to show what I’ve got. Prove that I belong to play with the likes of Rocky or Zindendel.”
“Well, you still have opportunities to show that,” Agundio replied. “There is the Combine, and, provided you should be seen as being worthy of it, there is the Top 24 exhibition as well. This isn’t your only opportunity, Jon.”
Jon nodded. “And I’m going to make sure that I am worth being in an FBA jersey.” Jon said, giving a determined look. “I’m gonna make sure of it, people will remember the name Jonathan Lawyer. In due time though, for now I got to work hard the next couple of months. Combine is approaching as you said, and I gotta take what I can get.”
“And there you have it,” said Agundio. He sat back. “If it’s any consolation, I think you should be able to handle it. Our practice game together proved that.”
“Thanks man.” Jon said with a more brightful smile. “I better see your ass do good in the combine too. So we could have a chance to play together for them top 24 games.”
“I will indeed do my best.” He then leaned forward. “I hope to see you there as well. We shall see.” He then turned, noticing the waitress coming up with a tray of their food. “And I believe that is ours, no?”
Jon nodded. “Yeap” Jon says lifting his cup in the air. “It is ours.”
Agundio clinked cups with Jon right as the waitress placed their food down in front of them. “Indeed,” he said. “Here’s to the Draft.”
Jon smiled sipping his water and begins to chow down on his food. After he swallows the portion he engulfed he begins to say. “Maaaan this ain’t bad at all. Haha”
Agundio gently lowered his burger, his eyes bulging as he smiled. He swallowed. “I’ll say,” he said. “This is actually quite delicious.” He smiled. “I guess Gordon Ram is somewhat like Sterling: loud and confident, but can back it up.”
Jon laughed, “I wonder who’d be worse to get cussed out by, Ram or Sterls?”
“Would there be a difference?” Agundio asked. He smiled. “Well, bon appetit, as the French would say.”
