the year i took this photo i got to see it land it did a very low level high speed pass before landing was quite a thrill , and i quite agree with you ,it,s also to me one of the most beautiful aircraft there is

the only greater thrill was getting to see a sr-71 blackbird land at the airport back when they had them flying over the area didn't get to go close up but was just happy to get to see one in person

The F-104 was an....let's say interestingly designed plane. They were hard to fly and had quit a poor safety record. I'm sure it didn't help that in the early models they had downward ejection seats.

the germans tried to make them into heavy bombers in the 1960's, kind of dulled the razor blade leading edges flying them into the ground like that...

I chuckled when I found out one of the German nicknames for the F104 was Erdnagel ("ground nail")

There was an Album dedicated to the German Luftwaffe by "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" mostly it was Hawkwind and Arthur Brown. It was odd because Hawkwind is sort of a different kind of English "Glitter-rock band" but it was strange to do a parody Album about a time when news of Europe about anything bad was suppressed so that in the USA we never learned, heard or knew that it had happened. It should have piqued my interest because it was talking plainly about a time i never knew happened, what life really was like in the fifties and sixties.
