Stargate Memories
By KittyT Norwood
The silence in the room was broken by a deep, throaty growl. Whiskers felt the air as the ears honed in on the danger. The cat’s rumble broke the silence again, angry at whoever dared to wake her. The shrill sound of the telephone had the cat on her feet and half way across the room before the second ring went silent. By time the third ring started she gripped the receiver and had it to her ear. "Tussand." She listened intently before responding. "Right away, Sir." She clicked the receiver and turned to wake her crew.
All members were up, dressed and ready. Like any military crew they were trained to be ready at any moment. She looked at her team mates, one still staring at his pillow in agony, the other two stood waiting. The bags under their eyes looked large, but the fierce energy in their eyes told her they were up for whatever came their way.
"Sorry boys, General needs us. Something’s wrong with the gate." She turned on her heel and marched to the door knowing her team was behind her. They made their way through the twists and turns, stopping briefly to enter their ID numbers in the keypad as they entered the command room. They walked in to see the Gate’s address dial in and the wormhole open, only to watch it flicker, flash, and close before their eyes. "The gate has been trying to activate. The first few times it started to lock, but before the last two chevrons were completed it shut down. This is the eighth time it’s tried to dial. It’s happening fast, looks like the last chevron just locked." The technician informed Kitty and her team. "Update NOW," The General yelled at the computer tech as he walked into the room, two security personnel behind him.
Kitty Tussand turned to look at the man as he tapped on his computer. She glanced over her shoulder at one of her teammates, then nodded toward the computer. Zhai was fast. An expert with computers and more knowledgeable then she with the gate, he would help the officer get it done. He sat down at an adjoining computer near the tech and began working his magic. "We have the last coordinates, sir. Pinpointing the planet now." He typed quickly on the keyboard and the screen flashed to a sky map and zeroed in on a planet. "Sir, it’s GC-4648. Team 8 was there 3 months ago." Zhai turned in his chair and looked at the General then turned to Kitty.
"Briefing, now. Bring me everything you have on GC-4648." The General barked. He marched to the meeting room with Kitty and her team on his heels. Thirty long minutes later Kitty’s team and several other personnel members were also gathered in the briefing room. All the chairs were taken and a few people stood around the perimeter of the room. Some held tablets, some papers. All wore looks of need, confusion, and interest. They wanted to explore, they needed to. The anomaly had them all on edge and they needed to find the answer.
The General took the report that a personnel member handed to him and placed it on the table before him. He was quiet for a moment as he skimmed the report, then laced his fingers together and leaned on the table, making eye contact with each person in the room to ensure that he had everyone’s attention. He locked eyes with one of his secretaries last. The secretary sat up in his chair and gave a quick nod to his general before reading out the key points from the report.
“Reports indicate that GC-4648 is an ice planet. Team 8 was on planet for two weeks and found no signs of life. From the information the team gathered, there is essentially no summer and the nights begin around 1500 and end around 1200 hours the next day. That only leaves about 4 workable hours. The temp drops to a harsh -40 at night also. Items of interest; GC-4648 orbits a blue sun that isn’t very common. Although the gate is on an ice planet, the sun is 12 times larger than our sun near Earth and burns hotter. Also, GC-4648 has twin moons that, oddly, have opposing orbits. While Team 8 was on planet they managed to survey most of it. It’s fairly small in size and mostly covered in oceans that look like they freeze over then thaw. The team said that GC-4648 seemed to have a hum. Tests came back showing that the planet has an active, shifting core. Our scientists believe the hum is caused by the massive shifting of the planet’s tectonic plates, which would give off enough energy to cause the hum. There is nothing else of interest noted. It seems that the team was called back due to the harsh climate and poor weather conditions.” The man flipped through his pages, glancing over the data to ensure that he’d hit on all the important pieces of the report. He stopped on the last page and added, “On an unrelated note, it looks like a Rookie lost his grandfather’s crystal marble while on planet, though I’m not sure of the significance of that to the report.”
"Could the energy be causing the Stargate to malfunction and dial out?" The General asked, looking from Kitty’s team to the six other people in the meeting room.
A man in a white lab coat spoke up. "It’s possible, sir, but really, we don't know. We think the energy that's in the planet is a form of radiation from the blue sun. Not harmful radiation, it’s much like UV to us, but after a millennia it could be causing the energy and plate shifts."
"Is there any danger at all that I need to know about with this planet?" The General glanced to the former leader of Team 8 as he spoke. "General, Sir, all we could find was ice.” The young Major replied, “Snow and ice. The temperature is too cold for most life. There was water, oceans with tides, but it was all covered in a layer of ice. No signs of Goa'uld. No signs of any life. There were no relics, precious metals, or areas of interest. At the end of our two weeks we called it and came home. Sir." He stood at attention after delivering his portion of the information.
The General reflected on the information for a moment before looking at each of Kitty’s team members in turn. They were tired and had just gotten back from a mission not 24 hours before, but each would step forward before anyone else. He seemed to make his decision after a moment of thought. "I say we check it out. We will send a drone through first to look for possible dangers. If it’s all clear, the SG1 team will head through at 1500hrs. Dismissed"
Everyone stood up and saluted the General as he left the room and headed for his office. Kitty leaned against the table with a sigh. Zhai gave his usual sign of agitation by ruffling his wings before kicking a chair. "We just got back! The Stargate couldn’t give us one night in our own beds?!" The gryphon stood tall as he turned to walk out of the room. Kitty shook her head. She understood his frustration, but that was the cost of being the lead team of Stargate Command. The first team in and last team out, they proved they were the face of SGC time and time again. They enjoyed exploring and seeing new civilizations but some days they just wanted to sleep. "Come on boys, let’s get ready." She stood up and patted Corin’s fluffy shoulders as they walked out of the room.
