I know what you mean. I absolutely hate getting my hands dirty. Also, I tend to be a heavy-handed writer/artist/whatever.... so I press down hard and tend to break the softer charcoal.
Another thing that bugs me about charcoal (and about Conte crayons for that matter) is that it is really hard to get good detail.
