20 years ago today the Prineville Hot Shots, a few smoke jumpers and a team of heli-taks were working a fire in the south canyon of Storm King Mountain, when the fire blew up. 14 of them never went home. The lead smoke jumper Don Mackey was near the safety zone, when he did what anyone who knew him expected he would. He went back to make sure everyone made it out. It was a decision that cost him his life.

Yes mam. We humans tend to be complacent around fire because we think we have tamed it. In many ways fire is what makes our way of life possible, and we are exposed to it every day. Think about your a cars engine. All that engine is, is a high tech hamster wheel to help us control and harness the energy of the beast we call fire.
What we often miss, is that we have only tamed that burning beast for a short time. If we give it a chance, it will get out and what that happens all we are to it is a threat or food. Nothing else.
