Morning Mist

I've been in a square-format painting kick lately. A couple weeks ago I visited some friends in Binghamton, and while driving along, the New York hills were billowing with mist. Misty, forested hills are pretty much my favorite place to be, so the drive was even more pleasant than normal.
I'm aiming to work with more subdued palettes, and if you know how I paint, usually I try to mash every color in the palette in there. I tried to limit myself to just a few colors for the background - colbalt blue, hooker's green, pthalo green, yellow ochre, and a little payne's gray. The gryphon and cliffs are burnt umber, dioxazine violet, and colbalt blue. Of course I added little white gouache for the mist and the spots.
6X6 watercolor on cold-press paper. The size on your screen is about how big it is in real life.

Is your desire to change your palette an academic exercise, or does it somehow reflect the goingson in your life?

It's mostly to improve as a painter. I feel like I'm unable to use limited palettes to create good compositions. There's nothing wrong with using lots of colors, but I feel like I'm using it as a crutch to make bad compositions work.

This is beautiful! The textures are beautifully rendered and man watercolors are a pain to work with so beautifully *w*

That gryphon reminds me of somebody I once knew. <3

Is that somebody's character? Would he perchance be flying over the Aerie of Grylra? :)

It wasn't based on anyone's character - just a gray gryphon :)
