After at least ten years, the Grimtooth and Emberclaw's pack had lacked a female; for at least the last five years, they lived in harmony among one another as the four bros of the Island, standing alone and free of the transgressions of the other packs, as well as avoiding 'The Big One', in addition to the monstrosities that humans created and inevitably lost control of.
Over a series of weeks, Grimtooth's behavior started to..change. At first the changes were subtle. While 'his' packmates had pushed through their last growth spurt, 'he' remained something of a runt. The quills that covered the back of his head fell out. But then came the biggest change of all; hormones. He went from a fairly passive and agreeable beast to leaps and bounds more ferocious. Little things seemed to set 'him' off, and his packmates (Emberclaw, Cinderscale and Redmaw) often suffered the consquences. One day, something clicked inside of Grimtooth and the final change came. 'His' body temperature shifted, and 'his' scent became..different. 'He' had become a 'She'.
They all had noticed it.
Though none more than the ambitious and willful beta, Emberclaw. Shortly after Grimtooth had claimed her place as alpha and matriarch of their pack, Emberclaw had quickly taken advantage of the situation and the packs only technical female. In a matter of days, their union had proven fruitful. The first clutch in nearly a decade had been lain.

Was a -really- fun RP, lasted two days with my mate. Tons of established history and the set up of future. I usually don't like to upload 'WIP's, or even stories... But I was excited by the sketch and decided to upload it early, and the brief short-story I feel really helps people to understand -why- I chose Grimtooth gender and really connect with her on the same level that i have. It also makes the image in general more enjoyable to look at, I think, and I'm excited to paint and render it. I'm probably gonna make it a nightscale with rain, because I feel like that'd be more dramatic!
All was sketched by me in Photoshop, and it'll be painted there, too.
Story and Grimtooth belong to both myself and Emberclaw.
