"We weren't always friends, in fact we first met as enemies. Once I gained his trust though, we were inseparable."

So wow, this was a truly beautiful thing to see in my inbox this evening. I was just, stunned. Thrilled to see it. An instant favorite <3
The idea behind this was simple enough - an alternate outcome to the "Fell the Lagiacrus!" quest in Monster Hunter 3, though I couldn't help but tie it into my fiction story as well, introducing my character Raven the Hunter and TP, the Great Jaggi on the bed. Lagiacrus is the same one you chase off and later fight for real.
When I saw the fight was a mere 'Hunt' and not a 'Slaying' quest, I immediately settled on going for a capture instead of KO'ing him. Unfortunately, despite all the preparation I made beforehand... Having supplies for extra potions and traps.... I actually forgot the Tranq Bombs entirely. Meaning when I met up with the wounded Lagi in the sea cave, I didn't have any other choice ;v;
The second half of my story loosely follows my misadventures in MH3, including the Lagiacrus fight (By that time Raven and TP are no longer bumbling idiots, but far from being experts either. They're just not helpless anymore) and I took that opportunity to rewrite my experience with Lagiacrus.
Exactly what went down in the sea cave that day is anyone's guess (Meaning I still haven't settled on a scenario that sounds 'right' to me), but Lagiacrus wasn't seen again by the village in the following weeks.... However, he still yet lived - his survival kept a secret by Raven and his friends. Lagiacrus only ventured out of his cave after dark to avoid being seen by the villagers - still presuming him to be deceased - and often taking a moment to swim by Raven's home for a moment when he did so.
Pictured here is the last meeting the two would have before Raven and TP tackled the true source of the problems, and finally enabling Lagiacrus to roam free in the daylight once more.
As for the title? I had a few things in mind.... But couldn't settle on one. Eventually went with a title of an episode from a show I'm watching but in a positive tense (Original is 'Ill Met by Moonlight').

I'd always preferred capturing the monsters. I mean while they're called monsters the game never goes out of it's way to make them look evil which is appreciative. They have the right to live as much as you.
Not to mention capturing them is more difficult and can give the hunter huge bragging rights. "I was beaten, thrown about, chewed on, crippled, and knocked unconscious but when it boiled down to it I never needlessly killed."

Well there are times *cough* Deviljho and the Magalas *cough* when the game - or at least those in-world - show and/or talk about said creature in a significantly negative light.... But they're not 'evil' in the traditional usage of the word no.
Capturing can be easier, or it can be harder. For me it's usually harder xD
I swear I get more panicked than ever when it comes down to that moment when it's ready or nearly ready for the capturing, and I start worrying I'll screw it up somehow. Sometimes I do screw it up too xD Like THE OTHER NIGHT FOR EXAMPLE http://raethalis.tumblr.com/post/14.....-i-do-horribly

I haven't played the more recent monster hunter games, I still only have tri, not even tri ultimate just tri, and all I can say to that video is: Zinogre tossed ya around like a ragdoll! I'm was surprised when you weren't knocked out a few times. Now I have this image in my head of Zinogre juggling you and your allies.
Speaking of capture do you know that feeling when your hunter misses the tranq bombs? Because I am stuck using the bowgun for capture since I can't aim to save my life with the tranq bombs. I mean come on hunter aim DOWN don't throw the bomb over them I can only carry around 3! You miss one bomb and either have to make more or just go for the alternative.

Aaaah like when you do a mount attack on Tigrex in MH4U and MHX/Gen - he tosses and rolls and jumps about so much it's amazing that you're not smeared across the ground and walls by the time he's done xD
Most monsters kinda just flail about a bit but damn Tigrex just goes nuts! Mounting is something new to MH4+, basically you jump onto their backs and start swiping away with your knife. It's like a little mini-game, where there's this gauge that fills as you do damage to them, and the monster tries to shake you off during that time. You can hold on tighter or attack, but not both at once - holding on slows the rate at the monster's part of the gauge fills, but rapidly depletes your stamina, and attacking fills your half of the gauge.
If you fill the gauge you'll 'topple' the monster and cause it to get knocked over helpless for a short period of time. If you get thrown off, well sucks to be you :P
You can also choose to just let go and jump off whenever, though I'm not sure what purpose that serves hehe...
Mmmm and yeah I know quite well. A few days ago I was trying to capture a Rathalos on Moga Island, and it triggered the shock trap I set... RIGHT as he knocked me down with a fireball. So I had to do that long getting up animation as the clock was ticking so to speak, and tossed the bombs.... One of them hit him, the next hit one of those altoroth bugs that decided to run over and see what was going on. The third hit Rathalos, but had no effect since he had broken free at that point >__<
He fled the area, and I went around destroying every bug in the area with my charge blade out of spite.
It ended on a good note though, thankfully. After beating up the bugs I went into the nest area and Rathalos yelled at me in typical dramatic fashion as I was setting the pitfall trap I had....... After he finished rawring he LITERALLY limped all the way from the middle of the nest over to the trap I had and fell into it. Seriously, he went from one end of the area to the other, limping the whole way, and right into the trap. This time nothing was in my way so the capture went off without issue.
Oh, and the Jaggi Trio that was present ran over to congratulate me by jumping up and down on top of Rathalos's back :P
Poor guy xD

I guess the Rathalos was just "Y'know what? I'm tired, just take me away or something." *plop*
Oh yes I know that feeling when the monster gets in the way of my tranquilizer shots from my bowgun. The little Jaggies always do little dance around the great jaggi and I end up pegging one but at least I can see them fly a mile high in the air. >:)P
Now that I think about it the little jaggies are kind of fun. They're just fodder enemies sure but they are so much fun to watch and it's fun to think they get into alot of mischief or try to be brave by jumping on the big bad Rathalos. Actually I think you should watch this animation I think it sums them up rather nicely.

That seemed like the case xD
It's fun seeing little oddities like that when playing. Like, when I was just starting out in 4G, I was harvesting from some plants in the Everwood and this pair of Velociprey ran up to harass me when a Yian Kut-ku dropped into the area. The velociprey all ran over to huddle in a corner and screech at it except for one. This one v-prey was literally at biting range of me when the Kut-ku arrived, but decided to run off and join his pack...... At first it seemed like that anyway, since seconds later he imemdiatley climbed back up to where I was, only to jump back down a second later.
He kept climbing up and jumping down non-stop until the Kut-ku finally left, after which he finally ran back to his packmates, just as the Great Jaggi arrived on scene. They proceeded to screech uselessly at him instead xD
I didn't have a capture device at the time, but managed to record a bit of that behavior with my camera at least https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwFbWXPmtZI
The Jaggi certainly have a lot of personality. They're also much less frustrating to fight than their prey/drome cousins - usually. I like how they've got both a Jaggi and a Jaggia, both with their own distinct style of approaching you, and of course their sounds~ But, there is one thing that really sets Jaggi apart.... Is that they'e one of the few monsters who will openly attack other monsters on-sight. Best seen during the Qurupeco fights, where the pack will alternate between going after you and going after the honkbird, but you can see them go after Rathian and Rathalos as well. It doesn't stop there though: I've seen Great Jaggi land the final blow on Barroth, I had a Jaggi's tail-spin attack defeat Rathian (When I was trying to capture her too uuugh!), Jaggi had attacked Lagiacrus, Nargacuga, Tigrex, even Gore Magala and Rajang! They'll attack anything xD The fine line between bravery and suicidal stupidity is crossed on a daily basis with these guys.
One cute thing you can do with Jaggi in MH3, MH3U, and MH4U is use torches on them. Best place to check this out is at the Sandy Plains or Moga Island (Or the Ancestral Steppes in 4U). Run up to a group of them and they'll start barking at you then attack, in typical Jaggi fashion. Then pull out your torch and they'll start backing off. They'll bark at you from a mostly safe distance, and only attack if you turn your back on them or remain motionless for too long. If you bap one over the head with it, they'll jump back then crouch down and glare at you while growling angily. After a bit they'll regain their confidence and continue following you around. If you bap them twice they'll leave the area ((As a side-note, any quests or side-quests that require you KO'ing Jggi or Jaggia won't credit from chasing them off. You actuall have to beat them for it to count.))
It doesn't serve much purpose, but it's fun to do. MHX/Generations removed the Torch item, so you can't play with them like that anymore sadly enough. (Can't get the Jaggi Mask either, since Great Jaggi isn't returning for the game. His minions are, but he isn't)
Yah, that's one of the videos that got me looking into the MH series, so long ago x'3
Still remains my favorite vid he's done.

Oh yeah I remember that. It makes me really appreciate how much time the developers put in programming the monster's AI and it's fun to see their reaction when you perform a certain act or use an item. The torch especially. Always found it fun when the Felvine would just attempt to sneak up on you and when they get close they just do this little dance.
It's funny because you don't know if they're trying to be brave and chase you off or fire is like the most amazing thing they ever seen.
Speaking of which I've actually have noticed the Jaggies attack other monsters and I swear they actually do go after the losing monster or hunter. Like every time I am knocked down they come after me but everytime I stagger the other monster they attack it which makes sense but I am just dumbfounded by the amount of attention to detail.
Speaking of which the developers of Monster hunter just love the little jaggies and they do give them alot of personality like in the movie clip with the Qurupeco where the Jaggies kept stealing it's fish and then litterally eat the fish in front of it's face they don't bother to hide or anything. Then the third Jaggi hops back a little when it was spotted. It's just so much fun to watch that.

http://akaii-tsukii.deviantart.com/.....grex-537929401 A silly little comic depicting Tigrex's rolling around when you try jumping on him. Also bonus: Monsters can force you to de-zone like that in a mounting attack if you're near one of the Area exits - it's frustrating, but in hindsight it's soooo funny x)
It's not as harmful though I think, though the monster could decide to resume its attack on your group or even flee following you getting phased off its back into the next area. It's why you generlly don't attempt a mounting attack when you're near an area exit since you risk the monster pushing into that and having you leave the zone as a result. Monsters can't really attack when mounted, but many will have some sort of thing they'll do inbetween flailing attempts when they're not fatigued (Gravimos and the Raths for instance will do that horribly annoying spinning tail-sweep attack) and THAT can hit your party members if they're close enough, but they won't run around and continue their assault like usual. Raths won't shoot fireballs or roar for example.
Also a fun thing to note is you cn get thrown off the monster if someone stuns it. NCH had a video on that too (Great Jaggi gets a little payback on the group hehe...), but I had it happen to me in Single Player amuingly enough.
In Tri and 3 Ultimate you have those little acorn dudes helping you out, but in every other game you have a Felyne or two helping you. In 4U when you have two of them out at once, sometimes they'll pull off a special team attack to help you out, my favorite being the "Rath-of-Meow" where they summon a cute little tank based on a Rathalos. It's pretty useful and they seemingly can't take damage while they're piloting it, but there was this one time....
I was in the Everwood fighting a Kut-ku and had it mounted, and was just prodding it with my poking stick like usual.... When suddenly I got knocked off. I turn and see my two cats shooting at the bird with their Rath of Meow tank, and realized they more or less shot me off the monster.
They didn't literally shoot ME off it no, their shelling at it stunned it and that got me thrown off, but it was funny to see happen and I like thinking that they mis-fired and hit me instead. xD

Considering what I know about the cats that definitely sounds like a thing that would happen. Like in one of those short movies highlighting their little tank skill. Or like in the DS game where you play as a bunch of little Felynes and try to get them from point A to point B by using all their little gadgets.
