Endless Realms bestiary - Griffon
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Ye olde (not-quite) standarde griffone, inspired by the colours of ornate eagles. The art director really wanted anything but the classic bald eagle-headed griffon, so I picked something with a bit more of an exotic colouration. I originally replaced the leonine tail entirely with large fanning tail feathers, but the director preferred something more catlike, so I compromised :V
Also, I understand why artists do it, especially in cases where the entire animal must be clearly visible, but I really like to avoid "winged animal stands there with wings half-folded" if I can - coming up with various mid-air poses where the wingspan doesn't dwarf the body is tough after a while >_O

And about the tail, I tripped across a ref sheet, here or DA, don't remember. Wasn't great art, that might be a stretch. But it was well thought out!
One of the things that was pointed out was the aerodynamic need for a tail on an avian creature, he did a human, but it applies to all IMHO. His compromise on a humanoid was half the tail feather protruding from the calves of each leg. Great compromise IMO vs having a flush of tail feathers at the rump.
Your compromise on the griffon looks amazing and suits the beast very well!!!!!

I'm glad to see it isn't a bald eagle head personally, because I've never liked the idea of something having a white head and a tan body, or more earthy tones. What you've done here though is amazing
You show a nice scale with wing to body, and I like how you have the tail feathers and a lions tail

Thank you very much :) I try to have wings on the larger size (wings that are too small bother me >_O even if they're on magical creatures that don't necessarily need to obey the laws of physics :b), but sometimes the limited canvas size makes it hard - if I make the wings fully spread, it means I have to draw the creature comparatively small to make them fit!
Yeah, I'm personally fond of hybrid tails on gryphons :3

If I may make an observation, which I usually don't do unless I mostly like something: The calf muscle is way off-sides to the haunch. It's like looking at one of those impossible 3D images. I find it particularly distracting as you've given this gryphon a nice thick rump, which I always liked on this species Short winged, but I realize they have to fit in the picture..... and beautiful wings and tail they are! Such a nice color pattern.
Haha, you're quite right. I meant to have the calf more squinched up into the leg, but got lazy I guess :V And yeah, fitting wings into pictures is pretty much the single most annoying thing for winged creatures, especially ones that are supposed to pack a lot of MAJESTY! punch. A large part of that is having the wings spread wide, but that rarely will work with the "8x8 square or 8x10 portrait" very conveniently :b
