Yes, the engineer (driver for you laymen) sits on the right side, and the fireman sits on the left (when he's not shoveling coal, monitoring water levels and steam pressure).
And for those that aren't aware, I have sat in the engineers seat and driven a steam locomotive - about 20 years ago.

SR 4501 was at one time painted in a B&O RR scheme when she played a part as a Q-3 in the movie "Fool's Parade". Her best scene was leaving Moundsville (Glory) WV at the end. She was a doggone uncanny stand-in, too. Check it out - any movie with 4501, Jimmy Stewart and George Kennedy in it is gonna be a good one.
