Endless Realms bestiary - Frost Giant
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
So, this monster block I'm working on right now is made up mostly of arctic or ice-themed creatures, so expect more snowy things! The biggest challenge with this guy and the giants in general was the balance of humanoid and monstrousness that the art director was aiming for, without making it look like a straight-up elemental of sorts. I tried to go for a slightly more blubbery look for this one, yet with the same hulking musculature that, so far, is typical of giants in this game. Facing off against him is an Al'miren Elementalist, who seems up to the task.

This is quite gorgeous, not just in concept but in execution in seeing one sizing up and interacting with another entity! And I feel like a broken record, but seeing your unique spin on something as established as a Frost Giant or Frost elemental is always a treat to see. I love the traditional hard crystalline jagged ice that molds and integrates into the more organic looking flesh and muscle. The hair is also a really nice touch and it fits really well for something that lives in cold climates. Also a big fan of the giant fanged void that is it's gaping mouth, very menacing and somewhat alien looking.
Thank you very much for the wonderful comment :)
Yeah, I wanted to do a bit of that crystal-look, almost like some sort of ice-mutant - maybe they started off as more humanoid, but it's like the cold got inside of them, and is trying to push back out, manifesting in various ways :)

You're very welcome!
Mm I'd say you certainly got that look of it, it very much looks like a product of its environment! Yeah I can certainly see that ice overgrowing it like moss on a rock somewhat, and especially with the shards near its shoulders like it is growing and forcing itself out of it. It reminds me of the Sons of Svanir from Guild Wars 2, how the ice spreads over their bodies and twists them into something else.

MMO's are a dangerous drug all their own lol. GW though I feel breaks that mold mainly because you dont need a monthly sub to make it force you to keep playing it to get your money's worth. And it's all open ended and rewards exploring the world rather than just doing quests all day. It feels more like an open world sandbox to me. But yeah, if not wanting to play, the artwork alone is quite beautiful. Your bestiary reminds me a lot of their style for their monsters, unique and terrifying, yet beautiful and natural looking in their world.
