This is what I wore. I finished the tail just the day before!
I wore the tail to lunch, then the entire thing to the exam I had. A friend wore a ninja costume, and we were all that wore anything to the class... Anyway, I got a couple of comments, especially from one of the lunch ladies - she was amazed that I made it myself.
(And yes, the shirt I'm wearing under it, that you can see in this picture, was tucked into my pants during the day. This is when I put it back on to show some other friends)
Oh, funny story, too - after I'd put it back on, a drunken girl walked past and into the elevator. As it was closing, I turned to face her and opened my jacket so she could see I was wearing it. She just goes a bit crazy as the doors are closing, wanting to know what I am. So I tell her, a fox, and the doors start closing again. Just before they close, we can hear her say, "Can I touch it?"

There isn't really one - I made it up as I went.
Monday, when I return to the dorms, I can take a picture of the "plans" I made as I created this and upload them. In the meantime:
*The entire thing was either Stockinette or Garter Stitch - I don't quite remember which. I may have even switched for different parts.
*I started with the arms, as one strip, that was stitched together.
*Each point where the yarn is a different color was knitted separately, and the orange torso was 2 pieces (stitched together along the spine
*All the fur was pinkie-finger-length cuts of yarn that I hooked into the knitted fabric with a crochet needle and tied in. I forget the knot's name - like making a fringe, basically, with one yarn length.
