Well, things are looking worse and worse and WORSE for Nate. Jesus Agouti, you win, whatever the outcome, uncle, uncle! The only other time I've ever been this creeped out about a character was a Goosebumps book where a giant mind-controlling slug-monster thing was explicitly eating slave children who didn't move fast enough, while their brainwashed parents drove home from the theme park without memory of them.
I love how these villains keep saying things to the effect of, "You wouldn't lie down when we wanted to destroy your mind eternally or have you eaten by a monster, so we're going to punish you for that by killing you!" Villainy and logical processes often do not go hand in hand.
It reminds me of my World of Warcraft days when a guy in the auction house sent angry whispers to me, telling me that I might as well give trying to sell my stuff because he was always going to undercut me. I'm like, "Uh, I already have these items and nowhere else to sell them, and you can't actually affect my life in-game or out. How exactly is this a threat?"
I made him so angry that he accidentally forgot a "0" when pricing his stuff. I bought it all up and resold it for an 800% profit.
