No story about rich folk (be they rats or not) would be complete without the family having a butler. Or majordomo, which is the title Steffan Torkel holds at Villa DeRatry. A rigid rodent (no pun intended), Steffan rules the household staff with an iron claw, demanding hard work and near perfection from them all (everything must be "just so"). But don't think of him as a bully; if you are a good worker and don't cause trouble, Steffan will behave relatively pleasant towards you. But if you're sloppy and lazy, he will either crack the metaphorical whip - or fire you, depending.

Steffan is extremely loyal to Clint, though; this dates back to the time when Clint saved his majordomo's life during a cave-in. It also ought to be noted that Steffan runs the house exactly how the previous Mrs. DeRatry (Vivian) ran it back when she was still around.

The young lady standing on Steffan's right is his 21-year-old daughter, Elga. A gifted creature, Elga attends the same schools as Ferin and Robert (on Clint's dime; he does it as a favor to Steffan), speaks three different languages (English, French and Japanese), is an accomplished dancer (both ballroom and ballet as well as various other dances), and can play both the piano and the harp beautifully.

And yet Elga finds herself barred from joining Ferin and Robert in their world of wealth and luxury, simply because she is a "servant's child", even if she is not technically a servant herself. Despite growing up on the DeRatry estate and being childhood playmates with the DeRatry heirs, Elga is still considered "below stairs" by the Ratropolis society. As you can imagine, she resents the heck out of this - though she's careful not to show it... too much.

And things aren't much better when you take the third rat in this picture into account: meet Sorrel "Sorley" Jarmes, the 17-year-old cousin of Charlotte (whose father was the oldest of nine siblings, thus explaining how 38-year-old Charlotte could end up with a teenage cousin).

By sheer coincidence, Sorley met up with Charlotte just after she wed Clint. The teenager announced that she had run away from home after having one too many argument with her mother, and could she stay with Cousin Charlotte for a while? Charlotte tried to call Sorley's mother, only for her to more or less beg Charlotte to take Sorley in, as she couldn't take "any more arguing" either. (It should be noted that neither Sorley nor her mother knew at the time that Charlotte had married a billionaire.)

And that is how an under-educated, over-talkative, crass young slip of a rat ended up becoming a guest and therefore member of the "above stairs" rodents over Elga. However, there is more to Sorley than meets the eye...
