And here representing Envy is Gruven Zann, son of Antigra and Gruven, and aspiring Taggerung.
Envy is a pretty common trait amongst the Redwall baddies, but for Gruven, it was his driving force - that, aside from his obsessive mother's naggings, of course. I suppose I could have included Antigra in this pic, but... that just proves how much I dislike her. I don't want to draw her. Man, she was so annoying. But anyway, here we have Gruven being envious of Tagg: while the otter gets all the love, attention and respect from the Juskarath (as shown through Sawney and Vallug Bowbeast, the two most feared and respected members of the tribe aside from Tagg, who are congratulating the otter on his latest triumph), the teenage stoat grinds his yellowed teeth and stabs the earth with a makeshift knife.
You'll notice that Tagg's back is towards Gruven. This is both a nod to how Gruven would love to stab Tagg in the back (or, as stated in the book, cut off his head, though Gruven would most likely have to stab the otter in the back first to realistically accomplish that), and how the stoat plots behind Tagg's back.
Since green is associated with envy, that became the main color scheme of this pic: not only is Gruven's tattered tunic green, but also his eyes (yeah, yeah, 'green-eyed monster pun', haha), and the clothing of Vallug Bowbeast and Sawney Rath. Tagg is wearing red, which of course is supposed to set him apart not only from Gruven but also the other vermin, for obvious reasons.
You may notice that there's a lot of little black specks all over the page. That's due to the fact that while I inked the characters, I kept the background in pencil. I was trying to make the forest look 'dirty', but I don't know if I accomplished that or not. ^^ Oh well, I'm still working on how to make backgrounds.
Also of note:
When styling Gruven, I checked the portrait YasminFoster on DA made of him for inspiration. I ended up just copying the earrings in his right ear, but YasminFoster's pic did help overall.
I also ended up having to reference pics that Temiree has done of Tagg, Sawney and Vallug. I needed one for Tagg since I was doing a back-view and Temiree has already drawn something like that. Plus, there really isn't that much fanart of Sawney or Vallug, and neither of their pictures in the book do much for me.
Of course, I did my best to make them all as original for my own style, but I'd still like to say thank you to YasminFoster and Temiree for doing their awesome stuff first so it can be easier for me, haha.
