It's the sort of thing that's funny because it's an "in-joke", where when you get it, you feel like you're a part of something. I'm not defending it, but it is what it is.
There's also the converse, which is making for of people who rely on "in-jokes", which is it's own sort of meta-in-joke (the "out-joke"), this probably falls into that category. (Not a joke, but an observation between you, the artist, and the people who come and visit your space. By the way that you both feel you make this observation, you feel as though you are connected.)
And then there's those that do deep analysis of in-jokes and meta-in-jokes (the out-jokes), (the metameta if you will) and trust me nobody likes those fuckers.
P.S. Farts.

You're assuming the main stream media is there to entertain you.
It is not.
It is there to make money. And if someone manages to realize a way to make money on internet humor (LOLCATS: THE MOVIE) then they are smarter than any of us. (Actually, not to rag on him, because that's a singular meta thing to do, but McFarlene does this all the time with shout outs to internet humor).
