What always struck me as funny about this story is how they couldn't eat from the tree of KNOWLEDGE. Better stay dumb you two mortals! Cause dumb mortals are obedient mortals! Or something like that.

Actually, I think Genesis describes two trees, the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve were clearly moral agents capable of discerning right from wrong already. All the Tree of Knowledge did was give them the human urge toward condemnation. I think it's an alegory for the New Covenant: A choice between Forgiveness (and Life) or Self-Rightousness and Jugement.
