With ten subspecies, the Short-Eared Owl flies through a large range of the world, occurring on all continents except for Australia and Antarctica. A part of their scientific name, flammeus, come from the Latin for “flaming, or colour of fire”. The only time it’s short tufted ‘ears’ are visible are when on guard.
