The only thing with games that makes me scream is jump scares that is actually good.
There are two types; jump scares you know that comes, and then they do, (known as cheap jump scares) and of course the jump scares i hate; the ones you never realized would come and then BAM... you shit your pants and try and sucker punch the screen only to hit the table... okay i'm not that violent, but sometimes i wish i was when i get surprised XD

rofl, games don't "scare" me, i played through outlast and only went like "AAHH!" for less then a second while making a spazz move throughout my body when a jumpscare happened, beyond that, i personally found the game rather tame. I had the same feeling with FEAR games and many other supposedly scary games. Suspensfu music just makes more aware of what's to come. I find it more scary to turn off the music as it leaves me unaware of weather i have been seen or not or more so how close the enemy is and the like. THAT to me is more fun. I suppose i try think of it as if RL; You don't have perfectly timed dynamic music playing in your ears if you were to sneak through a place like in Outlast, so why the hell do i have it in games?
Again: Music makes me aware and alerts me to possible moments of "WTF?!?"... but again, i have only had maybe 4 moments in total where i was genuinly scared in a game. First time was when i played "System shock" the first time WAY back when 8-16bit gfx was like the top of what a computer could pull, and MS-Dos was the king of operating systems. The 2nd time was when i had to kill the first boss in Duke Nukem 3D. That larger mother-humper just did not want to die before i did. (Back then, health bars was not much used. You just shoot till it drops :P). The 3rd and 4th time was in Thief 1 during the mission "Down in the Bonehoad" Where one had to get the horn of Quintus. I did not sleep for days after that. System shock 2 was the last game to ever vex me. IT was not scary per say, but holy shit it gave me nightmares... It still causes a few uncomfortable dreams after i play it, despite the dated graphics...
To me; gameplay is everything. To hell with graphics. You can still get a game that will make you piss your pants. Without jumpscares or an unkillable foe. As long as the enemy is heard enough and you never know where they are... System Shock 2 did this perfectly. Haven't tried it? Get it at GoG. Worth the money, if you can get past the dated Dark2 graphics engine. (Dark2 is the Thief 2's game engine btw)

yeah i hear you on all of this (i'll admit, games startle me WAY more than they should) i'm not usually frightened necessarily by the bosses/baddies, but usually it's things i dont expect XD like, the first time i played through Shadow of the Colossus, i lost it when i came to Dirge (the "sand snake" as i call him) once i figured out that you were supposed to ride your horse around and let him follow you, i turned to fire an arrow at his face when suddenly there was this gaping maw coming out of the sand. i just wasnt expecting it XD my friend and i probably paused the game and freaked out for about 10 minutes before we picked it back up again XD
idk, i feel like games like that (especially "horror" themed games) put me on edge much more, because it's not like a movie. i do agree that it's even MORE horrifying if the music is turned off, because you can hear SO MUCH MORE around you ;c; i had a time back with the original playstation where i would turn off the music on Spyro or Crash Bandicoot and it would weird me out that you can hear the baddies around the corner before you could see them, but in turn it helped the little-me figure out how to beat them before i saw them (mainly because with their sound bytes, you could tell what KIND of baddie they were)
but NO i agree :D game-play is key :D i dont care about graphics usually unless i am particularly looking for a "pretty" game XD i'll have to look it up :3
