A sedentary bird of northern Europe, Siberia, and Canada, the Willow Ptarmigan feasts almost primarily on the twigs and bugs of willow during the winter, thus its name. They are relatively unchanged from the bird that walked the tundras of the Pleistocene, or Ice Age. Alaska claims them as their state bird.
