"Valkyrie Dragons gained their namesake from the times of the Valkyries, when they would fight alongside the warriors in battle to decimate their enemies. The majority of these warriors were female, however, males were and still are brought into the ranks often.
When a person who was destined to become a part of the legion of the Valkyries came of age, they were bonded with a dragon at a young age. At 15, they were brought to the home of the Valkyrie Dragons, where they would seek out their life companion and partner to death. Once the dragon that was to be their partner was determined, which was usually by the approach of a bow, they would challenge the young Valkyrie to one of several things. Most common was a wrestling match of sorts to sit on their backs, something as a test of strength and determination. Others were tests of follow and trusts.
On rare occasions, the dragons bonded with someone who wasn't a meant to become a Valkyrie, such as an abandoned dragon being found and bonding with its finder, or if the dragon deems someone worthy.
When a Valkyrie-in-training and her dragon came to the time of their Rite of Passage into the battle-ready ranks of the Valkyries, one of their tasks is to work with their dragon to smith themselves their own armor. The dragon and their partners armor were based around the others, and no two pairs sets were the same. Some pairs had a more difficult time forging their armor than others, due to their dragons elements.
A Valkyrie Dragon only usually bonds with one person, and bonds with them for life. There have been cases where multiple bonds have been formed, but the first bond is usually the strongest. The same also applies to their mates, they mate for life, and often if their mate dies, they do as well out of grief.
Valkyrie Dragons are usually aligned to one element, however, non elemental dragons and multi / special elemental dragon cases have been known.
Due to the nature of their history, Valkyrie's pride themselves in war and battle, and readily accept the challenge of becoming a warrior, living for the ultimate blaze of glory found on the battlefield.
There are Valkyries that are disconnected from the war, and live as feral. They can still choose to bond with a human if they wish."
