Endless Realms player class - Animancer
Player class artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
It's a lizard wizard! Or rather, a Silean animancer.
Animancers are, essentially, a priest and a necromancer in one, as they manipulate the power of Animus, domain of the Dual God of life and death. While they are not strictly bound to practice balance, moderation and neutrality, delving too deeply into their art or favouring one side over the other risks incurring the wrath of their fickle god - an eternal curse or permanent loss of sanity are both likely results :b
I'm actually really quite happy with this one. I didn't have a very clear feel for the look and attitude of this class at first, but it somehow all came together in the end! Started with the concept of balance, and the art director suggesting using a black and white colour scheme for him; then I came up with the idea of having him wear a mask representing the Dual God, and various tokens, symbols, and physical representations of the forces of life/vitality and death/decay, and it all went from there :)
Also, stoked I got to do a hunky male mage :V The art director prefers female casters in flowy dresses and pretty robes, but I insisted at least one of the caster classes be male :b XD See, male mages don't HAVE to be lame dudes in dresses!

Thank you kindly :)
Heh, yeah. When I originally sketched him out, I wasn't necessarily intending him to be particularly muscular, just slightly heavier-built given his race tending to be more on the beefy side. But once I developed his concept more, he struck me as a guy that balances careful moderation and purposefulness with a kind of visceral raw physicality, being so tied to the forces of life/death. Sorta like a druid, he seemed to make sense to have a kind of physical toughness to him as well as magical.
... although, to be fair, his class IS supposed to be a pure caster. Just didn't want to him to some scrawny dude is all :b Doesn't stop him from being buff on the side! <3

Thank you kindly :) I actually hadn't consciously intended to have the Celtic knotwork sort of reflect the swirling energy around him, I guess I got lucky XD But yes, I had thought that a Celtic design would symbolize well the interweaving of forces that this class deals with regularly.
This seems to be a very interesting class to play as. Always having to walk the edge and never being able the coin on one of it's faces but instead watches the coin roll on it's side. Balancing the light and darkness in the actual campaign setting would be hard as well for the obvious path might not be the right path for the character.
Already a fun thought for playing this character is already have them losing there mind from from delving to deep to one side or the other. Like if you were at a major battle and you kept healing everyone and did your best not to let anyone die. Which wouldn't keep the balance since you are constantly healing and not using the dark side.
I have to applaud you when it comes to character design. There are to many books that just have casters as female in the long dresses or robes. That to me wouldn't off the bat say caster to me, and I think it has been over done. This is how I like seeing casters. Not in dresses or robes, but in a dress that anyone can be in.
I can see the dancer being the worst enemy of this class xD
Great artwork as always

Thank you very much :)
*nods* I'm sure it would be up to the DM how strict they want to be with a character that's "supposed" to favour balance rather than a particular side. Loss of sanity is always kinda fun, though ;)
((I should know - about half our party is borderline crazy in our current campaign, since there's an active insanity meter, essentially, that the DM keeps track of. So when someone makes a perception check, and SOME party members can see it but some can't, it's always sorta suspicious and hard to know what to take from it XD))
"There are to many books that just have casters as female in the long dresses or robes." That's exactly what the art director likes XD Most of the caster images will be female, but I think I'll do my best to avoid the cliches where I can :b So far, for casters, we have:
Elemental magic caster = http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16272129/
Spirit magic caster = http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16307564/
Chaos magic caster = http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16480211/
And now this guy, Animus/life/death caster
There will also be an Order magic caster, and I believe there will be another Spirit magic caster with more of a druid/shaman feel.
Heh, oh? Why the dancer in particular?

Sounds like you have an awesome adventure going on in your group. Having insanity like that it's a lot of fun. Makes it all work well together, more real, and that makes everything more crazy xD
The spirit mage outfit I can see working for either male or female characters. Since it's a guardian outfit, and they are care taker of spirits. It's like a traditional attire, and the Chaos made outfit makes since since they are also dancers. The elemental mage is the one that has some of the cliche stuff in it but then again she's a Kalamir, and would probably want to be as close to her element as possible.
Well the dancer has the ability to create elaborate illusions so there is the very real possibility they can influance one of these mages to do something to cross over to favoring one side over the other, and then making them feel there emotions to help encourage them to break there balance. Is it to obvious I sometimes play an evil character xD

My hubby is a great DM :) Really fun ideas, immersive and engaging, despite the OOC shenanigans that always inevitably happen at D&D games XD
*nods* The Elementalist was really the only one with borderline cliche-sexy-skimpy chick, but I tried to make it work with her being an ice mage and embracing the cold. The Dancer I thought also was borderline cliche-sexy-female-mage, but really I think that's actually in line with a mage who needs to be charismatic and expressive and can charm and whatnot :b.
Ahh, heh, yeah, I was thinking that's what you meant, but I wasn't sure if you were going with another angle ;)

It's more she thinks stuff like this (beautiful mystical sexy sorceress!): http://images2.layoutsparks.com/1/2.....l-mystical.jpg
is better than stuff like this (kinda lame dude in a dress?): http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs9/i/20.....sticDreamz.jpg
whereas I don't really picture the latter when I think of male wizards/casters :b

This seems like a fun, but difficult class if the player unconsciously leans towards one side or another. Though I definitely like this class concept, though it may be because you made it look so epic. Your choice in a male representative made me look at my books again and I noticed almost every table top book I have makes the mage classes female. An unconscious bias maybe?
*nods* As I mentioned to someone else, you may be able to be fairly lenient - like with alignments, DMs can probably be fairly forgiving unless players consistently play inappropriately, or do something rather drastic. Or a DM could be really harsh and strict, depending, I guess, on how they think the Dual God might be in the mood for :b
Hard to say, really. I know the "guy in a dress" thing is something most people want to avoid, but there are lots of ways to make it look good :b
