The largest of the gannet family, hailing from the north Atlantic, the Northern Gannet nests in colonies that grow as large as 60,000 pairs. They are diving birds, reaching up to 100 km/h in their vertical dives into the sea. Because of this they have highly developed sternums and lungs to counteract the effect of hitting the water. They migrate seasonally, having been found as far south as Ecuador.
