There were some ideographics being developed, but then Japanese learned of Chinese hieroglyphs and switched to Kanji.

Where they appear AFTER the video game has no relevance, they originally came from a video game.

Wait unknown were in the video game before they were in the card game? I didn't know that. Although I know surprisingly little pokémon history and trivia for someone having grown up playing both the Pokémon card game and video games. But to be fair I didn't pay much attention to pokémon other than how to play and then I stopped collecting the cards for a long time after my entire collection got stolen.

Yeah, everything in the card game is based on the original video games.
This was easier to see in Japan because each of the different products came out at different times starting in 1996. However when they came to US, everything arrived at the same time and is was a jumbled mess that confused a lot of people.
Like, they thought the video game was based on a comic book (like a lot of anime stuff was back then) when in actuality: The comic book was based on the TV show, which was in turn based on the video game. Then there were people who believed the card game was based on the comic book, but in truth they were unrelated to each other.
But I think things are better off now with more information available.

Well I knew about the TV show being after the video game came out but I didn't know the card game was after the video game too. But to be fair if the game was created in 1996 then I'm only a few years older than it at most which would explain part of why I don't know too much about the early stuff since that would be when I was way little.
