Hey guys, so I'm trying to get this done tonight but wow I have no clue how to paint leaves and I haven't found any tutorials that seemed like they could do the trick for this particular piece. Any suggestions or even if you want to paint over a tree or two to show me how you'd do it, i'd love you forever ;___; I just keep making them look messier and messier :C
I still need to add in the sky and detail out the canoe and the second dog and the chair, then throw in some better contrast shadows, but trying to figure out these leaves first D:
I never paint, this is so confusing haha

i don't have the skill to pull it off in your style, so i'll try to explain in words.
treat it similar to how you would for hair, fur, grass. first you rough out the shapes. then you focus on shadow/lighting and rough it in. you aren't looking to draw every leaf on a tree that is in the background. rather you want to create the impression of leaves. so maybe using a speckled/dapple brush and work like a traditional painting. drop down those darks and build up to your lighter layers. then try to refine in a few places with a bit of detail like reflective lighting and building shadows back up in places
IMAGE <- you can't make out a single leaf here, just a speckled texture with a strong contrast of lights and darks. every tree is unique, so they can almost be like drawing a portrait when done individually. however in this picture they are mostly similar in colour and blend together in places. doesn't always need a defined edge between them! can help with the flow of the image to join bushy areas together too
hope there's something helpful in this! good luck - looking wonderful

i've recently learned to treat an image as a whole rather than hyper-focusing on each individual detail and then hoping it all ties together in the end.
with this particular light source, the closest trees on the outer edges of the image would be darker and the background trees would be lighter. so i would suggest focusing on how the sunlight hits all the trees at once before trying to draw them in individually. this should also make it easier to visualize how you will build up the trees!
and remember to let the sky shine through some gaps between the leaves in places! :D

Anything with texture, you can try finding the texture you want/ that is similar online and overlaying it where you want it and lowering the opacity of the layer so there's only a hint of the texture there. The more contrast in the texture layer the more obvious it will appear when you knock down the opacity ;)
This is great for large areas if you can section them off and you can overlay multiple textures to make it more interesting :)

I think AlectorFencer has a good foliage/leaves brush pack, if y ou google for it it'll most likely come up :) Perhaps give that a try so you're not drawing every single leaf individually. You can manually highlight a few ones or draw some sketchy leaves in between so it doesn't all look entirely 'brush/texture-made' and gives it a more paintery finish.
I think you have the right idea going On. However since the lightsource is coming from the background rather then your foreground. draw in the sillouettes of your canopy with black at the bottom and slowly work in some browns and greens when you get to the top of your canopy. Add in some black and brown vertical lines for the tree trunksnin the fore ground over that. Draw a few branches going off your tree trunks with blacks and browns. Add a little bit of browns and greys on each vertical tree trunk. After you dobthis you will want to dab your leaves on with a round bristle brush using a green that is slightly lighter then your base green. after you are satified you can work in some bright greens and yellows and whites at the top of your canopy. Keep your pighter colors near the top of your canopy anr along the river bank. You want to build contrast. At the edges of the river that the sun is reflecting off. Towards your foreground you want yournleaves to be a flat greens. Since he eun is shining through them youbwqnt ligter leaves in the background and darker ones in the foreground. You can add a dark green stripe down the center of each leave To give them a bit more form. Try drwwing leaves like you would draw a heart. Vary the length and width to get different shaps. You have the right idea so far.
