The meerkat blinked as he continued staring at the clock blankly. For three hours, the loss his unknown future kept John up, staring mindlessly at the ceiling along with other objects. He just laid there, not knowing what to do with his life after college. All this time, there was only one thing that kept his life in order. The only thing that gave him friends, kept him close to them and his family was a certain activity he enjoyed playing: basketball.
Now, there’s a chance he may never continue this experience. Just the thought made him shiver in fear. He had to speak with someone… He needed to speak with someone. Luckily, there’s someone he does have in mind for this type of situations. Probably the one man that will truly understand his thoughts and would give the meerkat the best kind of advice that no one ever could.
He slowly got out of bed, trying not to wake anyone. He quietly walked out while finding his way out of the room. He quickly grabbed his pouch and softly opened and closed the door behind him in his North Florida Renegade pajamas.
The meerkat yawned softly, stretching his arms as he walked along the hallway. He rubbed his eyes as he slowly opened a door to a patio outside. John’s face became dull as he stared at the night sky. His mind became distracted from the dark clouds covering the starlight. He took a deep sigh before he leaned against the wall, sliding down along it as he took a seat on the cold hard floor. John looked down as he took a glimpse at his pouch before opening it with gentle care. He then reached into it and revealed the item that was a treasure he kept as a memory of his dad when he was little.
John stared at his own reflection in the mirror, keeping focus as he held it with a firm and gentle grip. He closed his eyes, taking slow, deep breathes as he tried to remain calm. After a few minutes, he opened his eyes again, and he saw something different. It was his father. John smiled warmly as he spoke. “Hey Dad…”
His father appeared to be around his mid 30s, with somewhat of a goatee. He has the same facial structure as John, but was a bit more cheeky than Jon. He also had a white samoan tattoo cross over his left eye. The older meerkat smiled back, softly chuckling a little before he replied. “Hey there Lil’ J. How’s everything been going?” His father asked. “It’s been a few days since we last had a good convo."
Jon sighed, looking at his father's eyes with sadness and uncertainty. His dad frowned a little as he says, "Is it about the game against Braylor?"
The younger meerkat shook his head. "It's not about that... Well,” he sighed, admitting to the truth. “I guess you can say it kinda is... Heh" He said while scratching his head.
"So… what is it about then?"
Jon looked away for a couple of seconds. It was a little tough talking about his issues with others. He looked back at his father and took a deep breath before speaking. " What am I gonna do…? "
His dad only tilted his head in confusion. "I don't… really get what you mean by that, Jon..."
Jon spoke louder this time, showing signs of desperation and fear. "What am I gonna do with my life, Dad? All this time you and the court kept me happy. I was able to make friends and keep my grades up because of that. Every time I'm there or at least talking with you, I feel like I'm actually important to the guys around me... I don't want to lose that."
Jon’s dad placed his paw under his chin while he closed his eyes. The young meerkat looked on as he saw his father in deep thought. He couldn’t help but lowers his ears, hoping that his father has some kind of answer. His father then opened his eyes, raising one of his fingers like he could have a solution. The older meerkat looked into his son’s eyes and begin to speak once again. “Well… have you tried listening to what your heart tells you?”
Jon couldn’t understand those words. “Listen to my heart…” He repeated. “I… I’m not sure what you mean by that.”
His father let out a small chuckle from his muzzle. “Come on Jon, it ain’t rocket science.” He said in a teasing tone. “Sure, there are plenty of suggestions I can give you on what you should do for a career, but it’ll be meaningless to you. You need to dig deep down and it’ll show the direction you’ll take.”
Jon kept the worried look on his face. He feels he’s been doing that time and time again the whole night, still nothing shows. Is he missing something his father’s is telling, or does he not have an answer either. It’s really putting him on the edge,
and his father could see that.
After a few moments of silence, his father took a deep breath before speaking again. “Alright, how about this… What’s the one thing that you’ve always loved doing? What activity makes you passionate? What screams… Jonathan... Lawyer?”
The younger meerkat thought he was kidding. It’s completely obvious on what he strove for… but this was different. He placed his paw on his chest as he looked down. He focused on his heartbeat with every thump he felt against his paw. Jon closed his eyes again and perked his ears up as he was deep in thought. He suddenly opened his eyes as they widened while he separated his lips as he finally found his answer. “It--”
The door suddenly opened wide, snapping Jon back into reality. A familiar voice spoke as his tiny pawsteps became louder. “Dude you’re SOOOO weird!! People are gonna give you looks again.”
Jon rolled his eyes as he saw Craig walking up to him, smiling. “Screw off, Craig.” The meerkat said, chuckling a bit.
Craig then sat next to him as he gently took the mirror from Jon. He was one of the very few he could trust with it. He stared into the mirror as he rubbed his face. “So I’m guessing you and daddy-o have been discussing on your future and shiz?” He said as he yawned.
Jon nodded. “He told me that I had to dig deep down and listen to my heart…” He said as he stared at his feetpaws for a bit. “I think I may have figured it out… but I don’t think it really helped anything.”
The porcupine carefully placed the mirror back in the pouch. He then turned his head over to Jon as he smiled at him. “Well, what is it then?” he asked.
“Basketball.” Jon said softly as he looked back up at the sky. “I mean, I honestly feel like that’s the reason why I am where I am, ya know? Having people who care about me, and let me feel extremely close to my dad, even if he’s gone.”
Craig chuckled a little. “I figured as much.” He said. “I mean that bet we made, to me that was more of a win than a loss. I’ve been having a mega BLAST watching you play all these years!! Plus, you and the fellas on the team have been like a family I never really had. I don’t even know what I would do everyday without cheering your ass on!!”
“Yeah…” Jon spoke sadly. “It really sucks that this is pretty much the end… I mean I wish I could stay a lot longer and play. What else is there to give me the same satisfaction? It’s just… really hard for me to have to deal with that.”
Even though the porcupine never really played the sport as serious as Jon, he understood how the meerkat felt. He stood up and walked towards the balcony. He closed his eyes, feeling the gentle breeze along his quills, thinking of a solution. Craig wanted to do everything he can to help Jon out.
“Hmmmm…”
Craig thought for a few minutes as Jon sighed and curled up against the wall.
Suddenly, Craig snapped his fingers and turned towards the meerkat with a very bright grin. “Dude I got it and you are going to be STOKED!” He said as he quickly picked Jon up and rushed him back inside.
The porcupine then led him to a computer lab and quickly got online. Jon raised his eyebrow as Craig continued searching on the internet. “Dude, what are you even ta-”
“Shhh Shhh Shhhhh….” The porcupine interrupted raising one paw in his face. “Watch me work.”
It took a few minutes, and Craig finally looked back with a wider grin. He then slowly moved off to the side as he gestures to the screen as he says. “Ta-da~!”
Jon gazed at the screen, quickly noticing what site his friend went onto. He looked back at Craig his eyes widened in somewhat of a disbelief. “The… FBA…?” He said slowly. “ I don’t know Craig…”
“The hell do you mean ‘you don’t know’?” Craig asked. “You can still play ball. You’ll feel even CLOSER to your dad than before. Plus, you get a MAJOR paycheck with each year ya play. How in the world can you not be going for this?”
The meerkat crossed his arms. “In case you haven’t noticed, like a million furs try to go for this thing each year. Only 100 gets submitted and 48 of them get drafted.”
“And you can be one of those 48.” Craig said. “I’ve seen you play practically all my life, and you got what it takes.”
Jon sighed as he simply walked towards the door. He wasn’t really sure what to think about the suggestion Craig gave him. As he touched the doorknob, the porcupine stopped him in his tracks by saying one sentence.
“I think your pops would agree with me…”
The meerkat was puzzled. The thought of his deceased father loomed deep inside his head. He went back to what his father said before Craig caught up to him. Is this what he meant?... He thought to himself. He felt his emotions starting to show a little. If this is the path that gave him happiness and satisfaction, it certainly will be a great step for him to treasure every minute with his father on the court.
Slowly, he took his door off the handle and turned around to Craig with a soft smile as he walked back to the computer. “Where’s the submissions form?”
