WHen I have someone tailgating and obviously harassing me, I start heading for the nearest police station while I'm calling 911 on the cell phone to report someone is doing all that shit and that you fear that they are getting ready to run you off the road or something. Drive right into the police station parking lot. This was the advice given by the police chief in my town as part of the CCW class.

Rather to my surprise, several years later, someone started playing silly buggers tailgating me as you describe happened to you. I was coming home from the range so I had a bunch of guns in the trunk also. So I called 911 while driving towards my town's police station. I pulled into the lot and parked, the person following me saw the two cops standing at the doors of their cruisers in the parkiing lot, and decided to drive on past. Cops told me to stay there and wait for them, then went out and pursued them, pulling them over.

When they came back later, they said that the person had seen the firearms related bumper sticker on my car and was highly offended that such a dangerous person as myself was allowed to roam free. Cops issued tickets for the moving violations they had observed before this person realized that the parking lot I was pulling into was the police stations, and told the person that A. harrassment was illegal, and B. harrassing an armed person was really stupid and dangerous.

They also advised me that having a firearms related bumper sticker on my car did attract trouble. Not just the kind I had just experienced, but also car theft and marked my home, to the slightly smarter burglars, that I had guns. Stolen guns were one of the most easily fenced items, and got the thief more money than any other non-jewelry items in the house.

Ever since then, I rarely put any bumper sticker on my car, but definitely not putting one on that indicated I was a gun owner.

When I renewed my CCW, I seem to recall being told to avoid display of any bumper stickers that may suggest gun ownership. Although, I do have one that reads: "You Can Give Peace A Chance--I'll Cover You If It Doesn't Work Out." Mounted on magnet sign material, so I can remove it and replace it as needed.

Now I want a bumper sticker like this:

I don't understand why people in the US treat the back of their cars like billboards. Obviously this lady was off her rocker, but the deeper issue is why does everyone use their vehicles like rolling, personal, bulletin boards? It attracts unneeded and unwanted attention most of the time, devalues the vehicle because of mismatched UV exposure on the paint, and generally speaking causes more harm than good.

I will have to agree with dalesql's advise above about calling 911 and driving to a police station. Cops take a very dim view of people that harass others on the road and so long as you're in the clear, the other person will get what's coming to them. Years ago I had a similar problem, did the same, and the person following me was arrested soon after as they had a outstanding arrest warrant. They were so hellbent on following me that they didn't realize where I was driving.
