My camera has developed the fatally annoying habit of depicting any strong light as white crosses. Does anyone on here know a fix for this, or is it time for a new camera?

Seriously, you gotta have a little fun with this while you can. Get glitter pics of the ugliest junk you can find.
But a little help; what make/model camera? It's kinda like 'I cant find the ECU in my car' 'what kinda car' 'It's got tires, why do you need more than that?' (Yes I've been told that before )

It appears that the "sparkle" effects filter is enabled.
You can read about it in the owner's manual PDF (pages 29-30), which includes directions to turn it off.

Sweet. Always nice to find it was an obscure setting and not dead hardware.
And, yes, it's possible for memory to get "flipped" which can result in all kinds of weird behavior, like settings turning on and off by themselves. This kind of thing is becoming more common these days as memory chips get smaller and more easily corrupted by cosmic rays and other natural radiation.
One thing specified in the manual is that when effects are enabled, the camera will save two copies of each picture -- one with the effects applied, and another without. If you took any photos you want to keep, the non-sparkly versions should actually be there on the memory card, but you'll have to search for them.

Waccoon beat me to it, but all is well. This is why I have Canons.
