I'm not usually one for speculation, but...I have a really elaborate guess that I'm just dying to share so I hope you don't mind. >w> *echem* So this "mirror" doesn't actually swap the gender, but creates a separate person entirely, with all the memories of the original - an exact clone EXCEPT for the gender now being reversed. So the original Kanel still exists somewhere, hence why she would reference him as a separate person, and this new "Kanie" remembers herself exactly as him right up to the point of her "conception," which is what causes her slight slip-up before his mention as well as why being female is something that would still take getting used to.

I'm either a million miles off or completely spot on. @w@
