The EC 3/3 "Ardennes", nicknamed the "Sangliers" (Boars) or "Groink-groink" (onomatopoeia of the sound of the boar in France), is one of the most active French squadron of the post war era.
Between 1943, year of its creation, and 1944, the squadron was based in French North Africa and had for mission the security of the coasts of Lebanon and of Lybia before to assure the protection of the Algerian coast as they served in the Bône Fighter Command, the unity of the Coastal Command based on the city of Bône, French Algeria. They served with the Hurricaine Mk.IIc, the P-39 Aircobra and with the P-47 Thunderbolt.
The squadron become active at the end of the year 1944 when it is sent in Europe, they will fight until the 1st May 1945 as a reconnaissance and ground attack squadron.
After the war, it will continue their activity in Germany until 1946 when it was mothballed. It will know a lot of mothballing and reactivation during all the post war era, in general, it is reactivated when there's a war somewhere where it should intervent. In the 50s, it will served with the F-84F for the Crisis of Suez, in the 70s with the SEPECAT Jaguar in Mauritania, Tchad and in Center Africa Republic and since 1994 with the Mirage 2000D two seated in Bosnia and Herzegonia, in Democratic Republic of Congo and in Afghanistan. The mission of this squadron is to assure the security and the protection of the ground troops, a mission which is often very difficult. The EC 3/3 is nicknamed "the boars" because of the insignia of the BR 44 "La Verte", the only historical Escadrille of the "Ardennes", which is a boar. The three squadrons of this Escadron are called "La Rouge" (1st Escadrille), "La Bleue" (2nd Escadrille) and "La Verte" (BR 44 or also the 3rd Escadrille) and are represented on the painting of this Mirage by the three colored arrows. The Escadron has two mascots, Aldo Junior, a boar of 150kg which live on the BA 133 of Nancy and a plush boar which fly in the cockpit of those Mirage since few decades, like Krakette, the plush stork and mascot of the EC I/2 "Cigognes".

About the name of "Groink-groink", you compared it with Asterix, I find rather funny because on the website of the EC 3/3, they also made the comparison with Asterix and their pilots like what they could be rather "brutal". After, the pilots of the French Air Force love to give some surame to their unities, for exemple, the EC 2/30 "Normandie-Niémen" has for nickname "Neu-neu" which, in an informal french could describes someone of stupid, but it is only use for the pronunciation, the written is "N-N".
