What's the deal with M/MF and F/MF designations?

Laikets, in general, are capable of changing their biological sex from male to female- whichever they choose to represent. some are unable to do so due to a genetic deformity and they're known as 'fixed'. essentially, the way they display gender is presented gender / biological sex, i.e. Gunner presents as male, m, but he is biologically capable of changing his sex, thusly m/f.

it's pretty roughly framed out at the moment and subject to tweaking since it needs to accomodate androgyny better- ultimately, gender was never really a "thing" for Laikets until the expeditionary fleet crash landed on their planet, Jeru.
