I've said it many times before, but I will gladly repeat ad nauseum: I love ruins! Ruins in the water, ruins in the desert, ruins in the forest, ruins in the snow, ruins... RUINS! Don't get the wrong idea, I don't have a stomach for destruction or pro-apocalypse scenarios. I just really love exploring the impermanence of civilization when it comes to the combined might of mother nature and time.

For all of these I use a photograph to provide me with a basic colour palette and sometimes even base composition. Since a photograph tends to have a large array of colours, I like to distil and pick only what I feel are key colours and use only those + gradient blending. The finished image ends up looking different from my ref material since I embellish and add a lot of features, but having that photo ref from the beginning helps me a lot.
I can indeed make one of these from scratch since I have done enough to imprint on my memory, but I find my internalized palettes still tend to be limited. These images are essentially my way of broadening my internal reference material.
