I just set up my collection of Pokemon plush in my new house...but...I think I need to expand it to more than just this shelf because I had to take out all of my doubles AND STILL all of these plush are ready to pop out from all the squishy tension. xD
Anyway, these are all of the Pokemon plush I have collected over the course of the 17 years in which Pokemon has been a thing.
Excluded are my bootlegs* (each of these is 100% legitimate, I DON'T BUY FROM EBAY/AMAZON, my bootlegs are mostly vintage and from before official plush were being made) and my doubles.
*Actually the Groudon may be bootleg now that I look at the photo since I got him from a thrift store and I don't know his origins.
NONE OF THEM ARE FOR SALE, NOT EVEN MY DOUBLES, SO PLEASE DO NOT ASK.
(I think pictures like this are supposed to go in scraps but no one watches my scraps so I'll scrap it later because I am an attention whore and I want people to see my beauties.)

Yeah, I work in the plush industry and I actually know about all that. xD
I know even scarier secrets than that, actually...
But, they do have subtle differences, namely, the quality of the material used. My roommate has fakes, and you can compare them - it's VERY obvious when you have two of them together. Also, there are ways to tell the bootlegs, like certain things on the tags. They are never 100% the same, and I'm not sure why that is. Well, the material is, duh, because they'd be cheaper to make and they can sell them for cheaper and still make a profit. But the differences in the tags, I'm not sure about, because if I was a Chinese dude trying to make rip-offs, I'd use the exact same tag, too. xD

I don't know about that - I do notice that the Pokemon Canter's own plush have improved in material quality over the years (currently they are using a material I am not familiar with, but it's AMAZINGLY high-quality), but plush of the same Pokemon tend to have the same material across the board, unless it's an updated version, but then the dates will let you know that.
I have never seen a bootleg with as high-quality material as the originals, but if you have, hey, I'll take your word for it. xD The bootlegs all tend to be made with velboa, which is a cheap, cheap material to use, and no one really uses that for retail plush. I know the official Pokemon Center plush are never made with velboa, but the bootlegs all seem to be.
My roommate's been buying the bootlegs like crazy lately, and the difference is stark. Admittedly, I couldn't tell that they were bootlegs from looking at them initially, until I compared them directly, so there's that.
The embroidery is different, too. I'm not sure if that's a legal thing? (China's copyright laws are...weird) But there's so much different between them that I'm a little relieved (I used to think it was near impossible to spot fakes).
I think what you're referring to is either what happens when a company changes factories, or when a factory "outsources" (boy, can that get scary...), but the quality would never fluctuate as greatly as what I'm seeing in official plush versus bootlegs.

Err, I said "velboa", I meant tricot. xD
Thinking about it, I'm sure the bootlegs get the cheaper material. It only makes sense. The material used by The Pokemon Center has to be insanely expensive for factories (it's some kind of intense "buttersoft"), and they'd probably only use it when getting a huge retail order like Pokemon would give them.
Then, on the side, they'd use cheaper materials (like the tricot I'm seeing) to make the bootleg line, which I know for a fact they do (our factories do it too, bahaha, China is so sleazy), and then sell them for mad cheap to compete with the official ones.
BUT, what you are thinking of (equal quality "bootlegs") might be what happens when workers take stock home and sell it on their own. If you can snag those (off of places like TaoBao, or even Ebay, if you're lucky), THAT'S the equivalent of getting an official plush, but at fraction of the cost. I have done that with some toys, and you can definitely tell the difference between "taken home officials", and "side-produced bootlegs".
I mean, I'm only talking from what I'm seeing here with our reals versus bootlegs that we have, and also with my ten years of working in the plush industry myself. x3 So, there may be things I don't know about, but side-produced bootlegs is absolutely a thing, but the quality is always...ALWAYS lower. And I'm seeing that even with the Pokemon ones we have here.

Nice collection. :D
Mine isn't nearly that big, but I... do have quite a few. Maybe it is that big. It's sorta hard to tell with how mine are... not really displayed. ^^;
I have quite a few Pokedolls, though, also started collecting the TY Pokemon Beanie Babies (they were UK-only, from what I'm able to figure out), a few of the "Pokemon Canvas" series, and a couple of the Pokemon Time plushies. I also have a custom hand-made Mightyena plushie, made in the Pokedoll style (didn't make it myself, bought it from :useryellow-fr3ak: ) I also have a bad habit of buying the Tomy plushies when I find one at Walmart or Toys R Us that I don't have... and was going to Hot Topic once a week last year to get the Eeveelution plushies. ^^; Kinda pricey, considering they now sell them at Walmart, but hey, have the whole set, I don't care. :P

Haha, yeah, sometimes if you've spent money in the past and then a thing gets cheaper you feel sheepish, but you never know what will happen!
A lot of the goods at Hot Topic can be found for way cheaper elsewhere, but not all of them. So sometimes it's best to get things when you see them rather than risk never seeing them again!

At the time, the Eeveelution plushies were actually Hot Topic exclusive. And some of the times I went, they were having a sale (buy 1, get one 50% off, or something.)
It's certainly not my favorite store, but they do have a lot of neat stuff.
Around that time, I also bought more than a few Pokedolls/Pokeplush and whatnot through the Pkmncollectors LiveJournal group... let's just say that more than a few items I bought were considerably more expensive than $18 plushies from Hot Topic. Felt easier to justify $18 when you spend $40 on a Winter Fennekin plush. ^^;

I'm a bit cautious about buying Pokemon plush online, since a LOT of them are fake, and the sellers don't even know, so mistakes can happen. D; But, I will say, my roommate SillyDog has been on a lot of those groups lately, and they seem to be very good at discerning fakes from real ones, so I'm glad there are experts out there. x3
Nice collection! :D I love seeing pokemon plush collections ^^
I need to update mine since it's nearly doubled in size since these pics were taken but this is my plush collection as of December 2014 http://lostlatios.livejournal.com/1161.html

Oh! I forgot, my Giratina plushies are actually in another location. I have all my Giratina stuff in one place.
I have two Giratina plushes. One I bought in NYC in the Pokemon Center so I know it's legit, and one I got used at a flea market, so it could be fake, but according to some group on facebook that specializes in telling fake plush from real ones, it looks like it's legit. I hope so, it's big, and awesome. x3
