There is a tale of a great snake who created this land...
In the beginning, the world was only a vast shallow ocean, teaming with ocean life and owned by a great mother snake. Her body was so massive that even tightly coiled, she reached into the heavens. Her responsibility was to stir the ocean and create waves and wind, to circulate the life giving properties of these elements. For a while she worked diligently, but eventually became tired, and rested on the ocean floor. But she forgot her own size, and every time she rested, she pressed the ocean downwards and the land upwards. In this way the first dry land was formed.
The mother snake eventually came to find the lands she had created, and seeing the need for water everywhere, sought to create lakes and rivers. She bore through the land with her massive girth, and at the end of each river, she coiled up and returned through her own entrance. when she had enough rivers above ground, she started to dig through the earth, creating caves and caverns for water to seep through to the unreachable lands. Eventually, she dug through to the earths magma, and lava came to the surface.
At first it trapped her, but her strength shaped the earth, and the magma could not hold her. However, she grew too tired to continue her duties, and when she finally made it back to the ocean, she once again rested. The earth and the life grew over her, and that is where the oldest mountains and deepest trenches lay. The world does not need her anymore, so she rests and waits until her greatness becomes necessary again.
