Well, manually, and I have yet to figure out another way, you can create a new layer, and trace the lines on THAT layer...
Or you could darken the layer to pure black and white, by fiddling with the brightness and contrast... I've done that before. It still needs a little editing, yes, but only with the eraser tool to trim problem smudges.
