PS: can you believe the BG was made with just 1 brush? I am so proud, rly! I just changed added the pen pression there and there and I think changed the texture once

Special thank to :(DA)kamari-inuzuka: who helped me correct a lot and edit the text a bit.
Side note: that one part to me is always feeling like it has been rushed, yet it was quite hard for me to pinpoint the problem.
I may rewrite that one, edit it a bit, but the essential is there.

Hide and seek
The hyena’s revelation was just as liberating as Ihsan thought. He would see only a few reasons for them to all lie to him at once, except simply answering to him swiftly to obtain easy food, of course. However, although somewhat eased, the lion knew the harsh trials were yet to come. To start, this territory was still unprotected for at least a few days if not more and that left the territory very vulnerable, if not attractive to invasive males. Ihsan still didn’t know the land well enough, not to mention the lionesses he had seen were like ghosts now; hard to tell if they had all left and where had they gone.
That’s why he halted on a kopje after his meeting with the hyenas, seeing it as an only chance to rest from his travel even though his impatience made his tail flicker and “patrol” in his sleep. He remained immobile, until the day would grow older, noon. That’s when he rose to roar for the first time, maybe a bit over-doing just to try to scare off any young lions that may have been bold enough to enter his lands.
Then, it was now time to patrol. It wouldn’t be a simple stroll around the borders just to mark them, no; somewhat experienced in the field, Ihsan evaluated, observed, explored, wanting to know every step, every stone of this territory he was making his, and that as soon as possible. That explained his slow pace and constant halt to sniff around and observe. It would take him a few days just to circle around the land that he could be sure of.
The march was found ridiculously easy; being a desert lion having to struggle to find little water, food and hoping for the smallest little shade to now just walk under the shade of acacias, constantly surrounded by plants, grass under his feet, herds in view sounded almost like a joke. His trip first took him close to hills that meandered down to the gorges. The scenery had changed since; rocky, treeless, although covered with thorny plants that would disturb his paw pads if he were still a cub. Ihsan continued his stroll towards the precipice, stopping only to lean over and scan the dry land at the bottom. The golden lion walked along the edges, finding the easiest way down after only a few moments, for the gorge’s promontory was slashed with numerous fissures, large enough it was easy to just jump down on it, follow a small track or then just slide down to another ledge further down.
Dry and dismal were the two words that would run through his head while he explored the meanders bellow. Ihsan was curious to know if this tear was going through the whole territory and dividing it into two plateaus or not. On his way, only small bushes, brambles and the occasional mud were there to keep him company. However, he had this strange feeling, like if a shadow would be moving along with a sweet smell carried by the wind. It’s origin? Impossible to say without leaving this path he was following, for the winds were swirling around his shape, and so the persistent smell seemed as coming from all directions at once. Ihsan gave furtive glances behind his back as he continued to walk, there was no lion born who would be sneaking on him today! It was as if the “threat” had seen the change in his stance and decided to stay at bait for the smell slowly disappeared with the stride.
The sun had long disappeared from its highest post in the air and had left Ihsan in the shadow of the gorge. Where he was now was clear in his mind; he had reached the end of his territory and the gorges opened like a door before him. Ihsan did not need to sniff the air to guess. The dirt here and there was strewn with skulls, old and newer remains of numerous lions, big or small and of which some only had the ribcages left.
The sight made him shiver slightly. Was that the fate of his predecessors? Probably.
He approached a fairly recent corpse sniffing it to try to unlock it’s secret, but nothing more; corpses were old, silent and had been cleaned by both vultures and jackals since a long time. However, a strong smell came as a response; the strong glands scents of various lions inhabiting the land beyond his territory. Curious, he leaned towards it, as if he hoped to see through the wall of rocks in the distance, then quickly spun around as if stung by a horsefly. No need to go further, he told himself, marking his own limits with his scent. It was now time to go back, to leave this suffocating place behind and explore his lands further.
His thoughts drifted towards the old guard of these lands; lying on the ground outside of his territory sand surrounding him on all sides set apart the plateau. Without life, yet still young. Sick? Simply unwise? What was this fatality which had struck him and what harm could persist within the territory?
His thoughts were interrupted by that smell again. The wind gently brought it close to tickle his whiskers, which twitched as he raised his eyes. This time the tracks were before him, this time, he clearly saw the shadow fleeing.
It was like a whiplash down his hind legs, this instinct that threw him to a chase, quickly his long stride caught on hers, but she was way more agile than he was and knew where she was going. Her little tail was just out of reach, then she started jumping from rocks to rocks and he’d lose her sight again but could still follow her scent, her track, see her just before she’d turn around the corner of a rock and call this solitary lioness:
"Wait! "
The words escaped him as he crashed belly against a rock that was too high for him to jump. He grabbed the ledge, painfully hoisted his body above and looked before him as pants would escape his throat. The lioness had stopped and he was staring at the blue of her eyes easy to discern from afar. Ihsan could not move forward. The cornice was too small for his stature and it was easy to tell from her smile that she knew she just had escaped him.
To ask her to wait, to know what to say was two different things. They both stared at each other, the female was sizing him up, as if tempted to attack and he would stand her glare with his gaze before she let go and disappeared behind a rock.
