This character and I go way back; I've had her for ten years now. I was fifteen years old when I made Nyxis, and she was originally a joke character: A satire on the idealized character, the Mary Sue. She was supposed to be too perfect to be taken seriously. I emphasized the "dark and brooding" in her repertoire with the mystery of how she lost her eye and gained the crystal eyepatch in its stead, and her refusal to tell anyone how she lost her eye was a way for me to cover up that I couldn't think up a backstory: she was all appearances, badass and pretty, but shallow and 2-D.
Although her original purpose was for comedy, high-school me found myself drawn more and more to the qualities I had given her: she was confident, successful, and wise, everything I secretly wished I could be. I really wanted to give her a full story, but all I had in life experience at this point was the start of her journey. It would take me nine years to finally see the world from a point of view like hers. A lot of things have happened between fifteen and twenty-four years old, and those life events: people I've met, places I've been, and things that I've learned are what eventually gave rise to the rest of Nyxis's story: ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12719475/ ) Her story in summary is, she is under a curse where she will die before her thirties, when the last petal falls from her sword. Despite this, she tries to live life to the fullest.
It has only been in recent years that I've fully embraced Nyxis as my main fursona: she is not only a character anymore, but she is an idea: a person who uses her position as a war general to bring peace to the world, a person with a crippling crystal illness eating her from the inside out who will not let it stop her from fulfilling a self-made, unexplainable desire to make the world a better place before she dies. Her sentiments echo mine in that the purpose of my stories is to enable and empower others who might have gone through the same struggles as me; I am afraid that a human lifespan is not enough time for me to get all my ideas out, reach as many people as I would like.
I'm trying to get Nyxis and her story out right now because she is my legacy; she is hope, ambition, and the pursuit of self-enlightenment: if she outlives me(and I dream of her doing so for generations!), then I have done my job.
Thank you for reading; I appreciate the time you took to do so!

Vaigh held a contest last month for two art pieces. The rules were to enter our fursonas and write about what they mean to us, and Nyxis was one of the winners. Thanks again, Vaigh, for such a cool chance to let the users of FA share our experiences!
Love on the original here! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/16301049/

This. All of this.
This is what characters are for. I've seen so many cookie cutter characters with such overused tropes... in fact, we have created so many characters. Nyxis, as you've explained, was just a character to exploit a trope, and make fun of it.
But we learn. Over time, we experience things and make our characters more. The more we experience, the more we can flesh out what the characters have experienced. At least enough so that the reader can look at their story and say "I've seen this happen" or "I've felt this way".
To empower the reader, and make them feel like they can relate to the character is almost the same as being able to talk to the author themselves. Maybe what they write about isn't from experience though, but the way they execute the story makes the story able for the reader to take it seriously.
Nyxis is a character that I admire because she is so well written and so well designed. Confident, charismatic, insightful... and a branch off of the wonderful person that you are.
Lorrie, thank you for being part of this community and gifting us with your amazing character! <3
(That was so dumb and sappy omg)
