Some folks don't know that I'm a furniture maker by training, and I specialize in adaptive bedding for "special needs" persons. This Stickley-inspired piece is my 24th bed in the 5 years I've been doing this.

Whoa! I've been reading about this bed as it progressed in your LJ. Very impressive. In comparison to the other styles you've recreated, this style seems to be simpler and uses less materials. Is that just a perception or is there any truth to my observation??
Thanks for sharing the pics there teddy bear and I'm glad you've got another project completed.

The design itself is indeed simpler, but the construction of it requires some repetition and a few skills with sorting parts for consistency. Not to mention the through-mortise, the drawbore, the square dowels...
The materials used are about the same, in the neighborhood of 100 board feet. But I could get away with a lot of "shorts" from the local lumberyard, which is why I can ask for so little. My parts investment is actually less in this one than in a cheap poplar unit made in Denver. God I love Amish lumberyards!
Also, you mentioned some years ago about the possibility of using old-style window sash pulleys and counterweights. Believe it or not, I haven't forgotten and still want to experiment with that.

We're having that problem ourselves, which is why I offer to deliver if multiple people get in on the gas within a geographic region. Gas prices having risen so high, it costs $530 to ship a crib from Cleveland to San Fransisco.
I'd love to see his stuff, got any pics of them?

oh god he hasn't done it in a long time, but i can try and dig up some stuff if your interested in seeing it. when we moved last time we had to throw out our first crib cause we just didn't have room for it and now we are back and when we get to a new place we plan to build another. but building such things is kinda hard when your on the 3rd story of an appartment building. but we are only here for 6 monthes. i will try and dig up some pics though, he used to go as "little care bear"
